k, i have a 1g that could have a possible cracked heater core. i was told they are only a dealership item ~270$ and that sucks. now the question is, would this be something i can do in my driveway with a simple set of tools? i know the coolant system will have to be flushed, the thermostat replaced, and the core replaced. is it a very time consuming project? how deep into the dash is the dang thing located? is it directly behind my ecu? is there any place that might have the install online? i found on dsmtuners a temp fix for it by bypassing the lines. is that very safe? i would only loose heated air correct? if so being as though summer is upon us i might go that route....any ideas would be greatly appreciated. thanks -seth

Hi there.. I recently changed my heater core. It is quite a aggrevating job, and fairly time consuming, but yet is easy enough to plug away at it.

The factory service manual was a great help. Basically the entire dash mush be removed, all electronics, ducts, trim panels, wiring harneses, Air Conditioning (if applicable) must be discharged professionally, but is not too expensive. Front seats must be removed in order to crawl in to get all the screws up and in behind the dash. Lots of small parts, like a jigsaw puzzle :)

That being said, it all went fairly well overall, just took some time.

I did find an aftermarket core for around $60 at Lordco. Aluminum and flimsy looking compared to the heavy copper factory one, but seems to be doing the job quite nicely...

thanks for the response. as of right now i added more coolant, looked under the dash again, and now im not leaking outside or inside anymore. i think i scared it into fixing itself ;) but im keeping a close eye on it. i think i may give it a shot, im sure soemthing isnt right.
