1G Coolant overflow question

Ok, I feel kind of dumb for asking this, but does the coolant overflow can need to be vented? The reason I ask is mine is not. It has a hose to the tstat housing and an o ring sealed screw on lid ...

it also does this if it get too hot ... I'll open it, add coolant, and it'll do it again in a couple days.

Ok, good. I don't feel crazy. I don't know why they would sell something that would have one...
