Confirming bad valve seals :(

This is the engine for the talon ive been building, it's smoked ever since I got it running but I was hoping it was just that I rebuilt the turbo wrong. Today I pulled off the exhaust manifold to swap another one on and saw that there was oil in the exhaust passages :( Can someone just confirm that these are bad valve seals? If they are I will take it to a shop once it is painted and have them do it because this isnt something I feel comfortable doing. And definitely dont feel like pulling the head.

Looks nasty, looks like youll be pulling the head and having them replaced especially if with a lot of oil, pull the head, and have the valve stems replaced. Parts are cheap labor isn't if you are paying for it to be done. Change them if your unaware of the mileage on them.
 
Not a bad job at all. But the euro tool export spring compressor, you can use it with the head on the block. Use the old rope trick and pull the springs off, pull the seals, and get your new ones on. Take your time and it will go smoothly. Not the best way to do it, but it's safe and will work just fine.
 
The easy part of rebuilding a head is the teardown process.If its wet, replace the seals.MAke sure u dont loose any, story of my life.16 seals is like 40 bux..

Getting the damm springs back in is a pain.See next to my couch for refference.
 
looks kinda like blow by to me. i can see very well, but theres no oil on the valve stems that i can see. and unless the seals are completely shot, it would only smoke under vacuum really.

there is however in one picture, oil around the valve face and margin. that leads me to believe either you have blow by (unlikely as well unless your engine is WELL worn) or you are ingesting oil from the intake side (PCV, fresh air crank case vent in the intake, turbo compressor side seals maybe)

I might also add that this is only with idle time while tuning and what not. I have yet to take it out on the road since it's been running so havent even gone into boost yet. As far as blow by, the setup it's on is 2 -an's off the valve cover going to a vented catch can. I've read it's not the ideal setup but it came with the engine so that's what I'm running. I'm not sure if that helps or hurts the thought of it being blow by but the intake shows absolutely no signs of oil.

This is exactly the way I did mine last Christmas, works well and had no issues, only thing you got to be very carefull for is the keepers going down the oil drains, but plug them up and your all sweet,

Best way to do this with the head on as you never know if your head will hold pressure for the valves
 
Leaky valve stem seals would have oil oozing / running down the stems of the valves, I know because my 97 talon his bad valves guides which had caused the valve seals to wear wrong thus making oil leak down the valve stems and letting the car smoke.. looks like blow by or bad rings to me
 
Would it mean anything if the hotside of the turbo showed no signs of oil residue, it's only black with exhaust gas. I'm assuming it doesn't but it's just something that I noticed as well. And I guess it wouldn't hurt to know that the smoke is white and isn't very much but it's there nonetheless, it's there while idling and gets worse when revving/2steping.

alot of times if the valve seals are leaking youll see smoke at idle when there is vacuum like previously stated. when you throttle up it seems to clear out.

if the rings are bad (not sealing) or the cylinder is worn, then you will see smoke while on throttle.

im new to these little hotrods with hair dryers, but by reading all of the intel from these dsm vets. youll also get smoke when the oil seals in the turbo are leaking. good luck
