Common for BS bearings to fall out?

Couldnt find any info on this.
But i recently bought a 91 TSi AWD talon. Its a complete car, but the engine had a knock.

I ripped the engine (6 bolt) out of the car and tore it down, and i found a FUBARed balance shaft bearing hanging out in the crank case. Seems a bearing for the lower BS slid out. Then the balance shaft proceded to hit the side of the block, there are obvious wear marks on the shaft and the inside of the block.

I didnt know if this was a common problem.

The car had an oiling issue which turned out to be a clogged oil filter, this was before i got the car, and the engine was cranked with no oil pressure and maybe ran... The rod bearings looked DECENT, werent the best. The main bearings were pretty worn out.

It looks like i'll be replacing the rings and bearings and getting a BSE kit.

Guess its better than i thought, I was thinking it was going to be a spun bearing, but turns out the balance shaft was making the noises. The crank is in good shape so i will need to measure and get my bearings and etc.

Is there any precaution i need to take since the BS was hitting the inside of the block. I doubt it hurt anything, but it never hurts to ask.

Thanks,
Brett

Sure, if there's a crack or hole in the block, you need a new block :)! Seriously, if the shaft bearing wore to the point that the block bearing seat was damaged, then even with the eliminator kit, you could lose oil pressure and that could be a problem!

If the BS bearing was spun out you could have damaged the block to the point it may not be usable due to massive oil pressure loss. Be sure to check the bearing journal surface.

The BS bearing wasnt wore down to that point, it came out and fell into the crank case. i found it all smahsed up wherre it had been hit and whatnot by the crank.

and it was the rear most bearing. From all the reading i have done... the first journal does the oiling and the second gets oil that passes thought the shaft.

If thats the case then the BSE kit would be what i need. The front BS bearing (closest to oil pump was still there. With the new bearing blocking off oil. any damage to the rear journal should mean nothing. This is assuming the block isnt cracked and i would still be using this block, I will have to get it cleaned up and look at it real close but it looks fine.

foxfan did you ever get your BSE installed? I have a similar problem with my DSM motor. The rear BS bearing is making noise. I am either going to attempt to replace the bearing with the engine in the car or just use a BSE.

There are two BSE kits, one with a shaved down shaft and another with the stubby shaft from the Mirage. I've read that the stubby causes problems with the oil pump. Is there any truth to the oil pump problems? Is it possible to replace the bearing without dropping the engine?
