I've been having some slight problems after my rebuild.
While cranking the car at a cold start up there's a screeching noise and the car struggles to start without giving it some revs and i have to keep it reved to about 2 grand until the engine is warm then it is able to idle on its own. The screeching noise continues until the car warms up. It sounds like belt screech to me but I find it odd that it goes away once warm.
Also my BISS is cracked and it sounds like air is escaping out of the crack.
I know I'm going to need a new BISS but I was wondering if the crack in the BISS could be the cause of both problems.
I'm wondering if that crack is a big enough vacuum leak to cause the start up problem aswell as the screech.
The screech noise could be best described as pinching the end of an air filled balloon and slowly letting the air out.
Thanks in advance.

BISS? Try spraying some belt spray on and starting it. That should rule out if the noise is a belt or not.

If you didnt know, a simple google search would have told you exactly what a BISS is. But I will save you the hassle.. Base Idle Set Screw...

To the op the screech is most likely your alternator belt. Try tightening the tensioner, bet that fixes your problem. If not, remove the belt and inspect it. Id bet it is damaged and replace it.

A small crack in the biss shouldnt prevent the car from starting like you are describing. A lot of people once they get their idle set they put some RTV in there so help prevent boost/vacuum leaks. How does the car idle when its warm? Pretty normal or low and sounding like it wants to die? Could possibly be one or more bigger leaks in your system..

Ill give my belt tension a check. last time I checked it was pretty tight. The belt should be in great condition since I replaced it during my rebuild which only has about 5 miles on it.

The car idles fairly decent once warm. Very minimal dsm idle sitting at around 1k

Once I get some free time I'm gunna take a good look over everything and check for some other vacuum leaks.

Where would be a good place To pick up a BISS screw? I found one on extremepsi for around 8 bucks. Anybody know a cheaper place?

When i did all my belts, i tensioned them all a hair on the tight side. the only one to screetch a day later was the alt belt. tightened it again. got a little squeaky, tightened it a tad more, squeeks gone. the tighteneing was redone over the course of less than 50 miles. i have since put on 1k miles, and still no squeaks. this is all on advance auto parts BS belts, although they were dayco premium, delco knockoffs i suppose.

I'd be worried that the screech was one of the new timing belt pulleys that's already gone bad.

I wish I had photos of the one that left loose on my brother's Subie. It made a hideous sound on it's way out, but he's completely incompetent when it comes to cars, so he just kept driving it until the bearing exploded. And then he kept driving it...

Couple thoughts.
First, do the screech and the idle problem seem to happen/go away at around the same time?
The reason I ask is perhaps you have sucked in/blown out a piece of the intake gasket. This can cause a nasty idle and a whistling noise. If it is a small leak, the heat would help it to seal itself enough to idle and stop making noise. Once again, I have seen this a few times in my days.

Next, if the screech is coming from the belts, use a little brake cleaner, sprayed on one belt at a time. It WILL make the noise stop when you spray it on the loose belt. Belt spray is designed for v groove belts, not serp. belts and you will end up replacing them again.
If you want to check the intake gasket, a quick check without setting up a BLT would be to use the aformentioned brake cleaner, sprayed around the intake when it is cold. If the gasket is leaking it will cause the noise to stop when the fluid fills the hole.

I just dealt with the same problem on my 1G (which I just bought). Checked tension and it was good.

Popped the belt off and noticed a lot of oil and grime in the pulley grooves. Cleaned it out with a brush and hosed it with brake cleaner to get all the oil off. Did the same to the belt.

Popped it back on, problem is gone.
