1995 Eclipse GSx with a 6 bolt. Code 1091 comes on and the runs like its on 2 cyl. what could be the problem. please help! car wants to die now.

This is starting to annoy me. I dunno. I didnt check it. someone told me. And I'm waiting to hear back from them. the whole problem is this... the car is a 95 with a 6 bolt. this kid took the valve cover off. in the process he screwed up the firing order on the wires. he prob used the factory firing order. but with a 6bolt you need to swap the wires 1 and 3 and 2 and 4. so the order was messed up. so i guess with the wires screwed up he tried to start the car, he said it sounded like it was running on 2 cyl. and it sounded very muffled out the exhaust. and apparently when he turned itover, the BOV blew apart in a few pieces. which makes no sense at all to me. His timing was checked, and its all set. I told him the correct firing order, and told him to put a scanner on it. all he said so far was that it had a code 1091, and that it was "evap control purge cont valve malfunction". I haven't found out yet if the firing order i gave him worked, and what not. but that's where we're at right now. now the problem isnt related to the 6bolt, because it ran for a while before all this happened just fine with the motor in. so it has something to do with when the kid took the valve cover off and swapped the wires.

Start with replacing the coil pack. See if you still get the code and perhaps he should be the one replacing it.

OK, so to give an update. After swaping the wires, the car runs on all 4cyl again. It's idleing like crap though and sitting at about 1200 RPM. I assume its a vac leak, so I told him to check for that. Any other recomendations? what vac line would have to be leakign to cause an Evap purge valve error? Thats what I'm trying to figure out.

Have you touched the biss screw? How is your TPS? Do you have an safc that shows your throttle %?
-I would do a boost leak test, Compression check, and give results. Basically give us a lot more info

yeah e did compression and he had good compression on all 4 cylinders. I dont have the numbers in front of me, but I know it was all within spec when I looked at it. He hasn't done a boost leak teast. Also he has no AFC on it. it's basically stock. All this happened after he took the valve cover off. so I am assuming it has somethign to do with that. But that Evap purge code could ave something to do with it. Could a vac line to that solinoid cauge a vac leak that would make it run shitty and cause the CEL? thats what Im thinking.

That evap purge code could be completely unrelated. There's nothing to my knowledge within the evap/purge system that could cause the car to run that bad.

The only thought that popped up, and I didn't think about it until after I posted to your other thread; How often is the car doing this? When it's running really rough, is there a point at which it recycles? (runs better) I wonder if you're getting a bad case random misfire.

A 6 bolt and 2G ECU kind of adds up to it. Unless you have a DSMLink or some other programmed eprom where random misfire detection can be cued out, this may be exactly what you are experiencing. Especially if whoever did the install didn't do the CAS wiring correctly. Typically the car will run fine for a while, then run like complete dog ass until you turn off the car and restart it. It will run good for a bit longer and then do the same thing again. Basically feels like you're either way down on power or lost a few cylinders. The things that effect the frequency of random misfire can be altitude, humidity, etc..

I may be reaching here, but it's just a thought.

However, if he screwed up the firing order, then you could be looking at the issue right there. You need a pocketlogger, pull some logs and see exactly what is going on. Most of the CEL's are pretty generic, so any decent enough scanner will be able to pull just the codes. Pick up the manual and start troubleshooting. The appliciable information starts at Pg 13A-150 of the FSM.

Sounds like you're pretty adamant that he's the one that screwed it up. When diagnosing a problem, look at the broader scheme of things instead of one specific incident, even though that might be the issue. If it really had something to do with the valve cover, pull it off and have a look at the head. Otherwise, fish around the engine to see if there are any unplugged sensors (especially along the firewall) and/or unplugged vacuum lines.
