clutch slipping...I think

Ok, I just got this 95 gs the other day, and it needs new tires, this I know, but it has another issue, which I'm realy hoping is the clutch...

In 4th and 5th, specifically over about 50mph or so, especially if I gas it hard, or if I am going up a hill, I notice the car kind of lurches a bit. I didn't notice whether the rpm's were jumping up or not.

If I'm careful w/ the accelerator, and don't get on the gas too hard or anything, it's much more controllable, and almost never happens. This doesn't happen at all in 1st-3rd from what I've noticed.

Like I said, I'm 90% sure that it's just the clutch slipping, but I was looking for confirmation, or other possibilities.

also when the clutch slips a lot it will smell like burnt clutch which is very noticaible.

I don't really recall a noise or anything....

I think I kind of recall smelling a little clutch burning, but frankly, when you're going 60 w/ a cigarette and the window open, at 2am, it's kind of hard to remember.

I talked to a buddy of mine who builds custom transmissions for gm cars in the developmental stage, and he said he thought it might be the synchros...I'm going to take him for a ride in a day or two, and see what he thinks.

No screeching or anything though, just a kind of droning noise when the "lurch" was going in and out...I wish I could think of a better way to describe it.

Perhaps I shouldn't have spent so much time at the bar tonight
