Yesterday I drove my car to a friends house and it was giving me some problems, mostly it was just hard to shift. Then I parked it and later that night I went to drive it home and it wouldn't go into gear. No matter what I did: pump the clutch, adjust clutch, bleed clutch, I couldn't get it into any gear while turned on. It does, however, go into gear while off.

Today I drove it to my grandfather's garage which is right down the street by starting it in first and leaving it in first the whole way, and it stalled when I stopped it in the garage (while clutch was pushed in). Obviously my clutch was not disengaging.

I have it jacked up right now (typing this from the garage) and while I was attempting to readjust the clutch I decided to take off the boot between the slave cylinder/clutch fork and the transmission. When I did, pieces of broken metal fell out. Obviously something in there broke, but I can't tell what it is. Anyone know?

Any help is greatly appreciated. I need to fix this car asap. Thank you.

mine did same thing, My throw out bearing shit the bed, looks to me like your fingers on the Pressure plate shattered,

But not going into gear has something to do with TOB, and i bet the clutch/pressure plate/ and Throw out bearing are toast.

If its your daily and you don't plan on being hard on it..

Id recommend..

EXTREME PSI : Your #1 Source for In Stock Performance Parts

^^ comes with clutch/pressure plate/ Throw out bearing/ and the alignment tool

EXTREME PSI : Your #1 Source for In Stock Performance Parts

^^ you MUST replace your fork when doing a new clutch IMO.. just do it save a headache.
and while your at it..

EXTREME PSI : Your #1 Source for In Stock Performance Parts

^^ pivot ball.

That should be good.. and under 300 bucks =)
This set up is still good on my DD tsi and i got about 1000 miles!

YOU MAY NEED to change your flywheel thats a extra 200 bucks if you need too. i reused mine!

Thank you both so much. That sucks LOL. Guess I'll have to tow it to my buddy's who has a hydraulic lift. Any other opinions/input is greatly appreciated.

I agree you need to remove the transmission to take a look looks like pressure plate pieces

Ok, so I got the transmission out and there are lots of metal shavings inside. The TOB is completely torn apart and so is the clutch fork. Also, a piece fell on the ground when I was taking out the tranny, so I'm not sure where it goes. I think it may be a piece of the TOB? Here is a picture of it:

Also, here is a pick of my pressure plate. From the looks of the outside, I think it is fine, but not sure so I wanted to get a second opinion. Here are picks of my pressure plate:

Pressure Plate 1

Pressure Plate 2

Do you guys think I should take it off and inspect the clutch disk or does it look alright? I would obviously rather not take it off, but I already have the tranny off so if I need to I will.

Again, thank you for any help.

That looks like the inner race of a TOB to me. Unless you have an alignment tool i wouldn't take the clutch apart. It looks to be in good condition.

I do not have an alignment tool, so i would rather not take it apart. Thank you for the quick response.
Also, is there any way to tell which type of pressure plate/clutch this is?

looks stock...and if your going to be modifying your car in the near future...wouldnt hurt to switch up the pp/ clutch set up for something more aggressive....i think south bend makes a full surface clutch and pp that people swear by...im running an act 2600 6 puck sprung and i love it but it takes getting used to

If you're looking at a new clutch assy, for ACT's, instead of the 2600, maybe go with a 2900. From what I've been reading, they have less pedal pressure than the 2600 after its been broken in.

can you really go with something that heavy on a stock setup? seems a little excessive no?

With a street disc it wouldn't it be fine? Then again, the hardest part of a 400 hp build is the clutch. If he wanted to hit that, it would be an easy bolt on ride to the top. Wouldn't reccomend it on a pre 97 7 bolt though. Apparently the excessive pressure can cause cr*****lk. But then again. A pressure plate that heavy will put strain on any engine. Which is why after a certain PP weight, people tend to lean towards dual disc clutches. But not reccomending dual disc as a replacement.
