Clunking when I hit the gas, or let off.

Victoria,
I inspected the front motor mount.. I just had it off a while ago, looks fine... so I just spent about an hour pulling out that SOB rear mount to check it out.. looks fine to me too, I don't understand? I'm sure that's what my problem would have been..

What else could it be? U-joints or carrier bearings? The rubber on the carriers has little cracks all over, and I can wiggle the shaft a little, but doesn't seem like it could be clunking.. I'll go try and check the slack in the u-joints..

Any suggestions here guys? last summer I had the t-case off and I gobbed some JB in the bottom of the drive shaft yolk to stop the leak.. and I seem to remember the clunking starting around then.. barely drove the car all winter, haven't been around here much.. so it's hard for me to remember exactly, but it may have been clunking before that too..

I'm just mentioning that because I remember I feathered a little too much JB onto the splines and I had to slide the T-case onto the spline hard a couple times to bash out some extra JB, and once on maybe now the T-case is pushing back on the drive shaft because of the JB in there? I dunno.. just thought that could possibly cause something..

I need to get this figured out!

My car was doing something similar awhile back. Ended up being the tranny side motor mount which had a visible tear in it. I know that the front and rear mounts are supposed to absorb most of the engine torque but they ended up checking out good in my case. So check ALL of them out if you haven't already.

Also consider a suspension issue. I would jack the car up and start yanking on things to make sure everything is tight.

I think I may have found the problem.. it appears I might have gone over a speed bump or whatever and high centered the car on the exhaust.. one mount was totally bent and the one of the other side was disconnected completely.. the cat was able to bang into the floor boards.. fixed that now.. so after I put the mount back in I'll take her for a spin and see if it's fixed... I sure hope that's all it was...

Well I fixed my exhaust, but that wasn't it..

Thanks for the suspension comment, I started checking out the driver side front wheel, and I found the clunk, I think it's the tie rod, that's where the sound seems to be coming from, when I pull out on the back of the wheel it flexes out a decent amount, with a 'clunk' as I let go, the boot for the tie rod is moving aswell..

I'm gonna consult the haynes here, I'm not too sure about this one, I thought the tie rod ends were the usual serviceable part.. but that's not where the flex is coming from.. under the boot right where the rod leaves the steering rack.

What a round about day!

..at least I fixed my bent exhaust mount and finally figured out the source of the clunk.

Haynes comes up dry.. nothing about inner tie rod ends... but I just searched and found a tech article by wret.. just about to read now.

DSM's are great. You go looking for one problem and end up finding several others along the way.

Well, I'm glad you found it although it would have been nice if it was something as simple as the exhaust.:)
