Closed throttle position switch!

FWIW, the '98 FSM shows the same TPS diagram as gofer posted above -- 4-pin unit where pin 3 runs to ECU pin 87 -- for the 2.4L.

Just to make my typing easier and clearer-
IPS - external closed throttle position switch / idle position switch
TPS - 3-wire / 4-wire, eventually well find out, but refers to the throttle position switch mounted to the throttle body.

Ok. I took my continuity tester and attached it to the harness where I thought the IPS single wire is. I ran a jumper to the ECU end of the harness, to the wire I cut off of pin87. Continuity! Now that proves that there is in fact an IPS on my stock harness / motor..

I looked at the TPS wires coming from the harness, where I had cut them and soldered them to make them longer for my tuck, and there is 4 original wires there. I did not use the "pin 3" wire at the time because I had the IPS and it was functioning through the seperate, single wire.

Conclusion! :aha: is that I was wrong on the OEM TPS being a 3-wire, it is in fact a 4-wire. But why is there an external IPS as well? The car is a 5-speed from the factory, and was equipped with cruise control. Could the external IPS, which leads to pin 87 on the '64 ECU be to control something other than rolling fuel cut? If thats the case then where does the "said pin 3" of the TPS go? I have a 3-wire TPS in the car right now, which obviously has to be from a 1G?

:ohdamn::ohdamn::ohdamn:

MD614772 - refers to an EVO 5-6 TPS?
Thats what I found in google searches. Does the EVO5-6 use an external IPS as well?

Possibly a spelling error, but just to be clear...
3-Wire TPS. Not IPS. I clearly know the IPS is a single spade, on/off type switch.

Correct, spelling error on my part.

The FSM also shows the original 4G64 throttle body being 2G style without a location for an external IPS (correct this time) so I'm still wondering why the data doesn't match what your reporting.

Are you the original owner of this car?

No, second owner. I bought it off of an elderly man with 68k on it. No mods or wiring had been done. Maybe in my many rebuilds i had rewired it and forgotten, but im not the type to foget something like this. The wire looks oem and has continuity to pin 87.

Looks oem meaning its going into the cluster#### of thick oem wrapping, which i never cut or touched.
