You could buy a used valve cover from a fellow tuner and take it to a shop and get it chrome dipped or take yours off and polish it up. Thats what most people do.

Mine is broken (over tighten screw), how much would cost me to get it chrome dipped... i assume i can get cover for about $50

well the price of a valve cover varies actually. Ive seen them for $20-$150. The chrome dipping, I dont know about that. Ive never looked into it. You can also look into powder coating as well. That can get you different colors!

You cant simply "chrome dip" something. Its called electroplating and its a little more complicated than simply dropping things into "chrome". Chrome plating onto aluminum is relatively easy but you need to find a shop that does it (this is somewhat of a specialty). You want trivalent chrome plating (decorative) and not hexavalent chrome (hard surface plating which is not as "shiny"). Make that clear to the shop, if chrome is the route you decide. Also, some valve covers are made of plastice which cannot be plated.

I suggest powder coating.

Get it powdercoated at TRGcoating.com AWESOME place. Also, remove some unnecessary vac hoses and emissions, and pic up some silicone colored vac hoses from Hightempsilicone.com or RRE. The larson kit from RRE is more than enough to do what you want.

Otherwise just use some tire shine foam to clean things up and some degreaser to cut out any grime. Your engine will shine. Also try to match exterior color (or chrome or polished) with your scheme, or a color thats complimentary. In your case anything will do. Purple, red, black, polished, chrome.

dont forget to check for what happened to greg's valve cover. He got one that was powder coated or something (colored in some way) and he noticed that the bottom was like pealing off. underneith was a LOT of stuff I wouldnt want in my engine, nor would you probably. let me go get the link and edit this.

When I had to get the head rebuilt on my wifes Talon, I had the valve cover off and found that same kind of nasty crap under those plates. Her valve cover has never been polished, plated, or powdercoated. On her valve cover it was just a build up of residue from over the years. I think the design of those plates allows stuff to build up and dry in there.

It's actually a baffle system designed to keep pure oil from getting blown back into your intake, rather just to vent pressure in the crank. It winds up holding excess oil which collects and cakes from the heat.

I had a shop around where I live do the chroming job for me. What they did was sand it down to take off all the rough spots and to clean it up a little. Of course, that is what takes the longest and the most money.

Mine cost me about $300 bucks by the time it was all done. It has definitely made an impact and I've always gotten compliments. I'd say do it, you won't regret it. Had mine for three years and not one problem. Just make sure the shop does good work and even tell the guy to take his time, cause it could make or brake the look of your engine.

wow that looks amazing, im sorry but i have to get the number to that place u took your too? the spark plug cover is that plastic dipped in chrome or did u find a chrome one online?:talon:

That is actually the injen spark plug cover. I scraped off the sticker on top and he dipped it for me.

I'd have to look for the number. It was done back in 2003 so I'd have to search. He did take a long time though

Is that a sock that you run for an intake manifold? AWESOME. ROFL

If you want to be, "cheap," take it off, let it sit in some paint stripper for a while. Rub off all of the coating make sure you use rubbing alcohol to clean off the paint stripper as well. From there go ahead and polish the hell out of it!

either way, in my opinion, they should be cleaned out

Unless you have had your rocker cover tanked you already have some of that stuff in yours.
It's the sludge from the PCV system that was baked during the powercoating.

The shop that powdercoated Gregs cover should have chemically cleaned it and not bead blasted it. It's almost impossible to get rid of all the blasting material and you don't want that dropping inside your engine.

Whatever you decide to do, do NOT go to www.chrome2go.com! Took like 4 months to get it and VERY disappointed with the work. :notgood: :notgood: :notgood:

When i prepped my valve cover for polishing, I used baking soda to blast with on my hyundai valve cover. Worked great, and all you have to do afterwards is just soak it on its side to get the stuff out because it dissolves in water.

Looks a little crummy in this pic. It hasn't been re-polished in a while.

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but I've got a few questions about that plate under the valve cover. I've got one that I'm polishing up as we speak and I noticed, under that plate looks nasty. Can I just drill those rivets out and chuck that plate? I know about the oil going into the intake but that should be taken care of with a catch can. If that plate is needed, then what's the best way to put it back on?

Nice Hyundai valve cover btw Boosted98gsx. I've got the same one, except with the dohc lettering still at the bottom.

What plate under the valve cover?

If you're talking about the baffling underneath the top of the VC then no, don't take it out. It keeps large ammounts of oil from getting into the pvc or intake tube.

And how would you already have it off if you're asking about drilling it out? You didn't drill it yet did you?

If so, you need a new VC. If it's still there, just send it out to a company like TRG, and the whole thing will be tanked and blasted to remove debris. Or take it to a machine shop and have then tank it for you. I just took mine off and used a powerwasher and simple green.
