Does anyone here know of any good chicago area engine rebuilders? I'm in desperate need of a rebuild for my 7-bolt. Also I'm working with about $1000.

save more coin up.... even getting your engine built back to stock will cost more than $1000.00 at any decent shop that will give you a good job.

you may want to study up and do the build yourself.
ask questions, read, then read some more... all the info you need to do it can be found on this board.

there is many guys here that build engines, and will help walk you thu it, and tell you what to lookfor and what pitfalls to avoid.

Apex in Bensenville is the machine shop that AMS uses. You can go directly through them. I'm currently having two blocks sent there within the next week. Their pricing is decent, but the wait time can stretch out a bit.

Oh yea? How much are they charging to machine your block? Just curious...

Haven't brought it to them yet. I still gotta pull the crank/rods/pistons out. I'm just getting a hot-tank, line hone, and deck the surface on both blocks, most likely. Unless there is other damage I haven't found yet. One block spun a balance shaft bearing and one rod bearing, and the other block has over 200k miles on it, and we gonna freshen it up a little. Soon as I get a price, I'll post back on here

Yep and I believe Bill is the guy to talk to over there

Ok cool. I'll keep Apex in mind because if I cant find a place to rebuild my engine I'll probably attempt to do it myself.

If you have never rebuilt a motor.....I wouldn't suggest it. It requires a LOT of proper tools and a fair amt. of know-how. Pay them the $125 to assemble the rotating assembly, then take the block home and bolt everything else on.

hmm I might just go with what you said, because once you get the rotating assembly together its just a matter of putting everything back together and dropping the motor back in.

Ok so what machine work do you think I would need done on my engine? Basically oil pump went bad and everything seized up.

At the very least, it will need to be hot-tanked, new freeze plugs, probably do a line hone on the cylinder walls, replace balance shaft bearings. Just tell Bill at Apex what your intentions with the car are. And he will suggest the rest to you. As long as the cylinder walls are good with no scratches or grooves, an over-bore won't be necessary. That's where the money comes in. Everything else is pretty quick and easy.
