check PCV while on valve cover?

alright well my valve cover is cracked, found a really good deal on a used valve cover that I want, comes with a PCV valve installed, unknown condition.

I know the PCV I have is currently good, but I've also added the 3/8 check valves everyone recomends. I've just had bad luck with removing the valve on a previous valve cover, although I'm sure the previous guy just overtightened it

So I guess my main question besides checking the PCV on the VC, is do you even have to if you already have the 100psi check valve in line? Only reason I can think of is if the PCV is clogged.

I suppose you would be ok, as long as you still kept the check valve in line, with an unknown PCV valve, that's basically what it is....but I would still get a new one.

if the check valve is good then dont worry about the pcv valve. All the pcv is is a check valve

Stops boost from blowing into your valve cover.

Just the check valve is sufficient enough.

Shoot some starter fluid in the valve to clean it out, shake the cover and you should hear the rattle within the PCV valve. If you do, then it's okey.

Tightening up valves is easy: just tighten them down to snug with not too much force - about 5ft lbs is all you need.

If the PCV needs to be change, spend the 8$ and buy an OEM one. Ive bought 3 different pcv from checkers, Napa and auto zone. they all leaked

yup agree with DSM1G90 just give it a shake and you should hear it rattle. is only 10 bucks for a new one

DSM1G90 probably had the best post, the main question was being able to test the PCV on the valve cover without removal. Is starter the fluid the only thing to use? don't have any. I just would like to avoid taking the chance of braking another used VC, as its unknown how tight it is. Last time it cracked with only a little bit of force, couldn't belive it. not into JB welding the VCs either, especially around the PCV area.

You can test it on the VC, blow into it, if it doesn't go through, you're good. If it does you need a new check valve. Then suck on it, if it opens with some force your good.

(You can use rubbing alcohol, charcoal starting fluid even gasoline .. anything that is a solvent will clean out PCV units....)

Do you really want to hook up a hose, suck on it and get cruddy hydrocarbon gunk in your mouth? REALLY ! "YUK!"

Interesting that one shouldn't be cracking VC due to loosening up PCV valves. One knows that you turn the unit counter-clockwise to loosen one up, don't they?

I would just replace it pcv valves are $3
Important ### suck all gases of unburned gas in the vc
And recirculates it to burn whatever's left
