Cheapest tuning system?

I hate the internet sometimes... This is getting a bit off topic.

Okay YES it Can be done provided you get the Evo ecu the voltage it needs to reflash. But not with the cable on it's own... I personally don't recommend it and without explaining in detail like so many fail to do with topics with anything people are not going to understand why. think about the average Dsm owner these days and the people "trying to save a buck" and what can go wrong :|

Also Read into what I quoted of your post a bit...

I Should have gone into more detail myself as well so I'm guilty there too. But I was having issue with tuners after my first post and didn't have any more free time later as I don't right now. Hence why a few things are less then proof read in my longer post. LOL
Sorry if you took this personal as I realize you are the one that has been letting people know that you can. I didn't want to get into a big debate as I rarely have the free time to explain in detail why I am saying what I do and at times from what I've heard things sometimes get taken wrong. being the Internet is tone deaf for the most part. :)

But,
Take a minute to think about how much trouble it is to get the Vag cables to log as it is... Then as well you are not providing the voltage to put the car in diagnostic mode to flash via it. I suppose the better way to say what I meant it's not at all the recommended (in my book) way to go about flashing your ecu for the same reason I grab an Op2.0 over a 1.3x to flash ecu... On a side note if you use any other software you may very well be running into issues and in turn a lot more trouble as well as I've seen myself with the VAG cables and driver conflicts if you manage to get one that has the right chipset to begin with.

Anyway back on to point here... ?

Logging a 2G, yes. My VAG cable connects to Evoscan immediately. When I go into more detail about it, on the evo boards, I always be sure to include that you need an FTDI based KKL cable, which is the only real requirement. I have a 1.3R cable, and have read the eeprom in it, and I can assure you, outside of a capacitor/resistor/etc added to the board, it's identical to the above mentioned chinabay cables.

It is not for the folks looking for 'cheap' tuning, but not because it's expensive. It's far from it, considering you can also use 3G eclipse and 02-07 Lancer ecus (AT or MT) with the evo 8 ROM on it, so an actual evo 8 ecu is not required. I get these ecus for $19 at my local scrapper, and they rarely go for more than $100 on ebay. People looking for 'cheap' tuning are rarely equipped for any of the available solutions, so yes, it's far better to go with a proven solution in that case.

All I'm doing is responding to someone who jumped into a pool of info that they're not as well versed in, and started saying that it wasn't possible. It is, and it's not difficult...but it's also not as straight forward as other options.

So rather than saying it's not possible, and calling the info a 'blob of misinformation', it would be better to dig a bit deeper and become more well informed. So, by saying it's not possible, you're spreading a nice blob of misinformation of your own ;).

well after doing some more research I have to agree that the safc isn't the best option. The ostrich tuner with jackal looks pretty good and I think that's what ill be going with. Link is good too if you need maf support.

There are bins out here that are free. I had phantom knock that I couldn't tune out with jackal. You will need the ostrich with jackal, so why not try a free bin first? Tuner Pro is free to try. Jackal is a form of speed density, so you'll need a map sensor....~35.00, an air intake temp sensor...~35.00, a socketed ecu...I did my own, you can too, and the ostrich~175.00?...~240.00 for a tuning set-up. Donate to tuner pro, cause it rocks..40.00, and you will be tuning in no time.

This is a great thread. Lots of options, lots of opinions from folks that know.
Dsm'rs are frugal, some inexperienced, some die hards. Look at different sites and decide what you want. Some platforms are based on the maf system, some are adapted to run on maf code, but use a pressure sensor and air temp sensor in place of the maf box. Some are based off pure pressure and air temp..aka speed density. Let's keep the good information flowing.
Oh, and does link have an app for that? Tuner pro does..:rocks::thumb:OMG

You can't flash the Evo ecus with a Vag cable and more than you can fash an H8 ecu with one and if by some chance you could... I'd take an Openport 2.0 over that for the peace of mind ANY day and log with a 1.3... Though I have all this stuff sitting around so I am not the average" person.

Actually you CAN flash an evo 8 ecu with a VAG COM cable . I'm the one who pioneered that, and while it's not well known yet...it's getting around. If you look up my username on Youtube, I have a video of the very first VAG COM flash on a 3G ecu. I've helped a bunch of folks on Club3G do the same, 4cyl and 6cyl ecus, as long as evoscan can flash it (7052/7055 processor), it works fine.

...so I responded to someone spreading a 'blob of misinformation'. I'm uniquely qualified to answer to the claim, because I'm the one who discovered you can flash these ecus with a chinabay cable. I wasn't aware this discussion was about 'cheapest and easiest for a newb' tuning options.

Wow Broke way to Read into what I said your own little way there...

What's to read? LOL.

It did come across like you were trying to slap broke down a little bit, My1G. Just a neutral opinion. I didn't see Broke as trying to be a dick to you or anything, merely correcting you and saying Chris wasn't posting misinformation at all.

Every now and then on this forum, someone new or someone still researching will post up an open ended question as the title of a thread. It ends up eventually 5+ pages long of members throwing in their opinion, and debating amongst themselves on whats better..yet the op usually never responds back to be more clear.. Other threads that need real help would be lucky to get a few replies. Vague and endless thread titles and situations, its just the run around man !!

To the OP, not to be rude you spent really good money on fmic, mbc, fuel pump, 880cc injectors and you want the CHEAPEST tuning measure ??? Come on...can you be more specific on budget please ? Are you willing to research and learn how to use safc, ostrich, tuner pro, jackal, ecmlink ?
Honestly your in between 50-600 bucks depending how deep your pockets and knowledge are. You can go old school, modern user friendly, software and chip burning tech..etc.

I completely agree and feel like an asshole for starting this thread and not responding till now. I didn't realize I was going to get such a huge response and honestly I don't understand the majority of the terms being thrown around. I appreciated all the input and I'm trying really hard to follow everything. Roughly I have gathered that I can save up my pennies for an extremely expensive DSMlink plus socketed ecu but the plus side is how user friendly and simple/supportive the system is...or I could go as cheap as a palm pilot, cable, and burning chips. I don't quite understand how burning chips work, but I've only scratched the surface. I would prefer to go the cheapest route and have no problem learning how to burn chips, develop/learn software, etc. Like I said, I have only just barely scratched the surface of this whole concept but I am pretty excited to start researching. Where would be the best database for self taught chip burning and available freeware for a palm pilot or even smart phone?

Okay... Cracked/Broke
Please read All what was said and quoted an Don't make any assumptions based of what you read here As well please. :)

My original comment was to the person I quoted not at anyone else fyi... Take it all out of context, take or make it personal and keep this going. :idontknow::beatentodeath: Because you know ECMlink is crap right :p

The point of what I am trying say and have been is FAR far the most IDEAL way of going about things and you still as I said can't "JUST" Flash a ECU with a Vag. :)

This is all getting a bit Redundant though and I think we can agree that things in the end have been clarified? On both our parts? Right?

In the end Perspectives variety on things and everyone has their own unate circumstances that come into play in their own situations ;)

Anyway...

xoulin Just Download This Here to start with TunerPro RTand Look for the Stock XDF/BIN here that you need. There are few other ways to go about things, Though as said above.

Once you have gone over and got familiar with the Software and see what you are working with a bit more you can start digging around for more info.

The 4th part of my first post has some info for logging with a laptop to get started the uses the same software above.

Honestly sorry my ignorance has stirred such a quarrel. Just trying to learn, first time dsmer and first time working with cars period. I drove a ####ing astro van that my grandpa gave me from age 16 to 20.

For logging, you can now log a 1 g on your newer Android phones. I did a video of it over in the tuning/logging section. I should have another video out this weekend on other things related.

Honestly sorry my ignorance has stirred such a quarrel. Just trying to learn, first time dsmer and first time working with cars period. I drove a ####ing astro van that my grandpa gave me from age 16 to 20.

We all have to start somewhere. That's why this board is here. Welcome to the jungle!

Where can ibuy a chip burner and some chips ? I'm really interested in doing this as well. I think it would be cool to be able to be able to do a new tune whenever I upgrade parts. I know the sell the burners and chips on ebay but I'm not sure what one to buy aand what chips etc can somebonysend me a link ? I ddon't think you can beat 50.00

Where can i get that one at ? And yes i want to be able to erase them so where do i buy that at ?

DO NOT BUY UV chips. There is no need.
I get all my ecu stuff from Welcome to www.moates.net! : Moates.Net, and the SST 27SF512 chips are electronically eraseable. They require specific voltages, and if you are not careful, you can corrupt them easily. Lots of people will say go with a chinabay eeprom burner, but IMO, that's a waste of time. Too clunky.

My gear:
-Moates BURN2
-Moates 27SF512 chips

Done.

Exactly ^ :thumb:

The Op Pm'd me and I more or less told him this or I would have posted it...

You can't go wrong dealing with Craig Moates down in Baton Rouge. Good people :)

I know this is an older thread but after some deep research I found that I will be going ahead with moates tuning. Of course it took me forever to find the option because everything dsm is usually dsm link. Don't get me wrong they're great. But I don't have 600 laying around from what I can tell nobody really had any issues with ostrich.
