Catching rust before its bad.

I just bought a 1990 N/A Talon and it has what seems to be the beginning of rust. It hasnt thoroughly eaten the body and for now it is just more like a yellow fade on the stock white paint.

What can I do to prevent or "catch" the rust now before it eats through the body?

Most likely if it is the common rust areas it is from the inside out. This means to eliminate it you have to cut it out. If you want to make a lesser repair spray some rust converter undercoat to the back side and refinish. Short term, grind, drill out small pin holes, grind edges away of larger holes, fill with duraglass and refinish.

There is really only one guarantee with working with getting rid of rust. It will be back, haha its so hard to get rid of once it starts. Even if you grind it all out, make sure you get every little speck out of there, somewhere somehow the rust will come back. A lot of people have this problem, and fiberglass work will atleast prevent rust from happening on the spots that are all fiberglass so at least you get some small assurance that way. I would look from the inside, use some rust eliminator/preventor, and spray it with spray paint or undercoating. Then you should be good to go for a little while, otherwise you will have to cut some holes and that will be a big hassle.

Rust is like cancer, once you got it it spreads and its very hard to get rid of

Hey i'm from buffalo too, yeah my car is rusty also, but that's what ya get from living in buffalo. I just try not to look at it. The worst spot on my car is the driver side door pin, it's rusted right through, i don't have a clue how to fix it. Just like the other guys were saying you have to get rid of all the rust or it will come back. Good luck
