So I was changing my clutch master cylinder today and noticed some rust under one of the brackets on near the strut tower. The paint was bubbling up alittle bit around. Can anybody give me some advice as to how bad this is?

If you can see it on the edges like that, chances are very high that the entire area between the surfaces of the welded section are probably rusted. That's not to say that they are rusted to the point of weakening. You can pour some antirust paint, or POR, into the seam to slow, and possibly stop the rusting.

However, the biggest problem for 2Gs, is the hidden brace underneath the shock tower that rusts first. There are some threads on here of members cutting and welding in new shock towers and you can see the pictures of the brace, when they cut the area open.

I haven't studied to see if this area can be made accessible from underneath. Maybe other members can speak from experience on this. I will be investigating that possible underneath access, this summer.

Thanks for the reply dogwhistle. I was hoping it might just be some surface rust but I am worried it might be like you say and go deeper. In your opinion on a scale of 1-10 how worried should I be about this? Theres some pretty scary pictures of strut tower rust on Google images.

I don’t know what the number on the scale would be, but now that you are aware of it, why let it go? There are many 2G owners that wished they would have discovered it as early as you have.

Do a search for strut tower rust. Click the ‘Search Everything’ box, and check the ‘Titles Only’ box. You’ll see how others have dealt with this issue.

Don’t panic, but don’t ignore it either.

A wirebrush and a can of primer has always been my solution to rust. Unless it goes all the way through, then some welding and bondo. Open it up and see just how bad it is before panicking.

Thanks for the responses guys, I appreciate them. I won't lie I did panick a bit when I found it. But I'll do some more digging and see if I can better determine the depth of the damage.

Thanks for the link. I was seeing some similar repairs in the big merged rust thread. I got some sand paper and will be hopefully sanding the tower down this weekend and seeing how it is .I looked up in the wheel well and it doesn't look there is any rust there but that may not mean anything. So we'll see. I found a bit more around the bay some by the trans mount and some rusty fenderrust fender bolts on the opposite side so I'll probably just go though and hit everything I can with that por-15 or I read about rust bullet which seems good also.

My suggestion if trying to keep it cheap
Get something to sand the area with
Sand down the rust
Light coats of rust converter
Light sanding again to smooth out
And hit with a spray can of colour matched touch up

Never to be seen again
