Hmmmm.....that IS an idea.... I wonder how much room you would have for fitment?
Get rid of your ac move the alternator to the back and dump powersteering it would work. On my first gen ive done all that so it theoretically would be very easy for me to toss on an evo manifold and pick up some of the fp evo style turbos.
I think the biggest issue you'd have would be that in order to incorporate wastegates, you'd have to put them on the adapter, which would lower the turbo down pretty far. I don't think it'd be a deal breaker, though. I've considered fabbing something like this myself if I ever went back to a T3/4 frame turbo again. ATP makes something for EVOs already, you could theoretically buy one and cut it up and re-clock the outlet:
Manifold Adapter, allows T3 flanged turbo such as twinscroll GT30R to bolt up to Stock EVO8/9 : atpturbo.com
It still wouldn't clear the balance shaft tunnel on the front of the block without a 1" spacer at the head.
