im thinking about getting a carbon fiber hood to save some weight, but is it really worth it? i was wondering if somebody has the stock hood weight, and how much your average cf hood weighs? ive went to some sites that sell cf hoods, but i cant find the weight! another thing, (ive also searched for this, but have gotten many different results). How much does a bone stock 2g dsm weigh? to get more specific, a 2g GST, leather seats, 5 speed, sunroof, and power windows/locks.

You'll also gain MPG with weight loss I believe, so why not? I would just recommend keeping the safety stuff if its a DD.

well yeah, i didnt mean to make it sound like you had to get rid of the safetey stuff. I was just trying to state a point, that if you wanted to get really serious, saving every little single pound will add up, and help. And to some people, removing the air bags and wearing a 5 point harness is safer than keeping the air bags. pretty much, weight saving is up to the owner. However dedicated you want to be, determines all that you can due. Yeah, ill admit that 3 tenths of a sec. might not be worth smelling exhaust, hearing everything that goes on, being uncomfortable, and unsafe....but.........its up to the owner. I was just stating a fact that the extra 5 pounds from a modded stock hood, and a CF hood can make a difference. Just like that extra drop of fuel when fine tuning.

I have a 2880 pound daily driver without a carbon fiber hood. Yeah, if I get in a wreck i'm screwed with no bumpers, but it sure is fun have a light ass AWD.

The above mentioned cf hatch with speedglass or lexan is supossed to weigh about 15lbs compared to the factory hatch 45lbs. Thats 30lbs saved and it is in the rear of the car so you still have weight up front for FWD. Plus the price of the cf hatch $350 and flat lexan $200 is just a little more than a cf hood.

its definitly lighter but I dont think it would hurt or help you any to be honest, in my opinion I would rather get a hood with vents to vent out some heat... You really dont want to make the front end too much lighter unless your all drag with lsd and etc...
The cf hood is light enough for you to hold it up and down and swing it around with one arm, but be cautious some of those hoods fade after a couple months of summer sun unless you keep a thick clear coat of this stuff thats sold to help protect carbon fiber....
If your doing it for the look though be my guest.... Think of weighs to lighten your rear end if anything, like carbon fiber hatch perhaps.

if ## so concerned with weight they make carbon hatches also. Some things you have to be careful on like the bodykits out of carbon i doubt they weigh less than plastic. My friends stock rx-8 hood weighs less than his carbon. this def isnt your case, but you see what i'm saying. bonus to weight reduction is carbon hoods look nice

On my race car I use a trimmed stock hood. The underside is gutted out....yes, it doesn't have the structural stability of a stock hood, but once it's latched down it doesn't matter. I can send pics if needed. It's very light and accomplishes the same without spending the $$ on the carbon fiber hood.

I would like to see some pictures of your hood if you dont mind. I have taken all of the bracing off of mine but I think the main hood itself is two layers, have you taken out the bottom layer thus leaving just the very top outside of the hood?

Power to weight ratio is important to make you accelerate faster, but taking out weight does a lot more than make your 0-60mph faster. With a lighter car you brake, and turn, handle faster too. Just adding more HP is only going to make you faster.... but taking off weigh is going to make you go faster, turn faster, and stop faster... it'll make everything faster.

If you want pure street performance and don't care as much about looks there are soo many places where these little DSM's can save. After I hit 350awhp, here's what I have planned....

Already have AC out. -35lbs
Switch stock 40lb battery, for a small 15lb batt. -25lbs
Switch the 44lb stock hood, for a 14lb CF hood. -30lbs
Switch 50lb F seats&brackets, for 25lb race seats&brackets. -50lbs (both seats)
Removed Rear cloth seats, and seat belts -40+lbs.
Remove spare tire and jack -35lbs
Remove board privacy cover, tire cover, and little brackets -20lbs
Switch stock 45+lb wheels/tires, for lightweight 25lb wheel tire combo. -80lbs (all 4)

That's a total of -314lbs! WTF
That's crazy weight savings, and that doesn't even touch the safety stuff like bumpers.
Also about half of that is free performance ...just pull it out. And I know you'll tell a difference because I did it on my last stock DSM and I could totally tell a difference.

Right now my car weighs about 3200 with me in it, and @ 350awhp that's a 1:9.14 power to weight ratio. After I take out 315lbs the car will be 1:8.24 power to weight ratio.

If I wanted to get a 1:8 P/W Ratio in my 3200lb car, and just wanted to add HP.... I'd need 400awhp. But then I still wouldn't stop, turn, or handle any faster. So for me... I'd rather have a 350awhp/2900lb car that does everything faster; than have a 400awhp/3200lb car that only accelerates as fast as the 350/2900 car.

Anyway....
I think less weight is always good if it doesn't compromise the car :thumb:

I have a fwd, and my carbon fiber hood works great, but make sure you get hood pins. One of my friends didn't have them, and was driving on the highway when his hood went flyin up and cracked his windshield. Also-fyi if you get in a lil fender bender even if it is like 2 mph that new $800 hood is going to be toast:cry: (I know from experience. this is my 2nd evo hood).

My GS (2gb) weighs 2920, with me and my laptop in it. I weigh 170, so the car,
(with leather seats) must weight approx 2770 LBS. This was measured on a semi-truck
scale, so + or - 5 LBS
