Hi

I have been having this issue with my dads 1Gb Talon tsi awd.
We have ordered a Eprom ECU and he installed DSMlink v2 himself.
The car was working fine last week.

Last 2 days i have been trying to connect the DSMlink software with the car. Everytime i get a IO command timed out. I am using a Keyspan 19HS to connect the car DIAG plug with my laptop.

So we switched the ECU with a stock one,and it started without a problem. Everytime we are done with the car we switch the battery off with a killswitch.
One day i tried to start the car with the Eprom ECU. I heard a few ticks(3-4) coming from the Radio area.. And it didnt start anymore.

Can some one help me with this problem?
I tried opening the Eprom ECU, but could not find any abnormalities.

But it doesnt go..what other explanation could you have for me? The ticking noise should be something right?

I opened up the ECU again. I shined a LED light on it. I might have spotted a leaking capacitor. When I wiggle it from left to right, a black fluid seems to be on the bottom. I guess ill post again after i fixed this.

Ok.. i have been trying to find capacitors to buy. I found one at radioshack, but it is rated 36 volts instead of the 16V on the Eprom. It has the same Farad, but different voltage. Will it be safe to run this?

You could just send the ECU to ECMLink and have them repair it. That way they could check it over and fix anything that is wrong with it.

Im all the way on this island. The work that ECM link is going to do is the same as mine.Just repair the capacitors due to their age. I already bought the capacitor and am waiting for a reply that its allright to install it.
So again..the one i bought is 36V and 100 microFarad...the stock ones are 16V 100microFarad. Can i swap the new for the old?

On v2 if you shut off power from the battery, ecmlink resets..

Not on a 1G, only the 2G V2 versions do that. On a 1G the V2 daughter board has memory to save the settings and as long as the ECU continues to get power after the ignition is turned off for the few seconds delay the MPI relay provides it will save the settings and shut down. You can remove the power at that point and everything will be where you left it when you power it up again.

The 2G V2 doesn't have the extra non-volatile RAM, it uses the CPU's battery backed up RAM so it looses it's settings when you disconnected the backup power.

Steve the wiseman..perhaps you didnt read my question. Hopefully you can answer it for me.

Based on what I read, you already know the answer. The most likely answer is that your EPROM ECU went bad. If it had old caps, turning the power off and then back on every time you use it will increase the chances that one fails.

Does the CEL turn on for 5 seconds when you turn the ignition on?

As I pointed out, if you going to use a kill switch with DSMLink you have to wait until the MPI relay clicks off normally before you can turn the switch off. It's during the shutdown time that they do their houskeeping.

If i recall correctly the CEL went on,then turned back off. It takes a while for me to close down the car. Turning off the battery is the last thing i do. The car will get a good 15 sec of housekeeping time before i kill it.
I know the capacitor isnt good anymore. I bought new ones, but can i safely run 36V instead of 16V capacitors? This is keeping me from fixing it.
