Ok, so I just got done installing a 2.3. Finished timing and bolted everything on. When I try to start it, I smell gas through the intake filter and it won't turn over at all. There's spark and there's fuel going into the cylinders. Anyone care to guess what's wrong?

The smell of gas on the filter is irrelevant. Is every sensor hooked up correctly? Check your MAF, TPS, CAS and your vac hoses.

Actually the smell of gas in the intake tells you something important. That the gas is somehow getting there. Usually by the intake valve opening when the exhaust one is open and shooting raw fuel into the intake instead of building compression and igniting it. Check all of your marks again.

The pins for the cams on the cam gears are both supposed to be pointing upwards right? That's exactly where they are. I will be checking crank timing today, although I'm not sure how that would be responsible for it.

Are you reffering to the crank shaft mark? If so, that should have been checked when you check your timing marks on the cam gears. If you are reffering to your base timing that is set with the CAS, then ok. It should still fire right up...reasonably.

I would check the connections on the coil pack, and resistor, CAS, all connections on the TB, MAF, everything....and do a compression test....first.

I already quadrouple checked every electrical and vacuum connections. I just did a comp. check and it's at 0. However, this same thing happened when I put my Web cams in and the dowel pin on the intake came broke off. The dowel pins on the stock cams are fine, and the engine will fire up if the intake cam is retarded two teeth. I found this out when my belt jumped. I do not have time to rip off the head again. I guess the car will sit for a while. Thanks for the suggestions guys.

Just an update for anyone that checks on this thread for help.. I pulled the valve cover off and checked the rockers. They slide right off a.k.a. my valves are bent. Brand new 1+mm BR valves down the drain. I've already ordered another set so hopefully I can get this thing running soon. Also, my tensioner is frozen which is why I think my timing belt slipped. ALWAYS MAKE SURE YOUR TENSIONER IS GOOD!
