Couldn't find the exact match to my problem after searching, so i need some help.

Had to change out a bad water pump. After taking off the tensioner pulley for the T-belt, the cam gears rolled about a fifth turn. I had duct-taped the belt to the cam gears so as it wouldn't come off the teeth. I neglected to check the crank and oil pump pulleys. Put everything back together and cranked the car. No start.

I pulled the spark plugs and each cylinder was getting fire. Then I pulled the return line on the fuel rail...spit fuel when I cranked it.

Tore it all apart again and re-aligned all four pulleys. Still had all the spark plugs out, so I turned the motor by hand and shined a flashlight down the plug holes. No dents in any piston. Put it all back together and still no starting.

It seems the timing is off because I can smell raw fuel in the tailpipe and I am still getting fire to every plug. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

No offense, but have you done a timing belt/water pump install before? Retiming a DSM system isn't just about keeping things from moving, but it is pretty specific. Chances are if the timing was off that bad, you probably have bent valves already (You wouldn't be able to see any scoring on the pistons just looking down the spark plug hole).

Sounds like you left the crank position sensor unplugged. Can you check your codes?

I would also do compression test ASAP.

I would guess the above as well. Make double sure the plug wires from the coil are going to the correct plug.

Thanks for the replies. First, i have, unfortunately, changed the water pump before with no problems. The point i was trying to make with the pulleys rolling is i'm not sure if JUST the cam wheels turned or if all four turned as i was removing the T-belt from the bottom two pulleys. I re-aligned the cam wheels but paid no mind to the bottom two pulleys. The only thing i remember unplugging was the connection just above the A/C tensioner pulley, which i did plug back in. Is that the crank position sensor? I may have unplugged something else and totally brain-farted. Temps were about 110 when i was wrenching on the car, so i may have forgotten something. Thanks blcknspo0ln for the link, but my marks are a bit different than yours. *edit* Just noticed the link was to a 6-bolt in a 2g...that explains the different marks. *edit* I will tear it back down and post a pic. I will head to Autozone and do a compression test asap. Plug wires are to the correct cylinders. I do have a datalogger and the 'puter hasnt thrown any codes yet. Again, thanks.

Check all the timing marks (crank and both cam sprockets) and check all your electrical conections and get back with us.

Graveyard bump, I just finished installing a new water pump and I'm having the same issues. Timing marks are in check and everything looks to be connected. I tried to keep the install as simple as possible. Turns over fine but just will not crank.
