Hello all,

My car is a '96 gs-t spyder w/a 5-speed, no mods. Yesterday, when coasting to a light the car stalled out on me. Ever since then, it cannot hold an idle. If I put it in neutral, the RPMs will just drop all the way down and it shuts off. When I start the car I must give it a little gas or it will just die.

I Pulled the EGR valve and cleaned it off as I had a similar problem several years ago that doing this solved. After I did it this time the car ran great for about 15 minutes and then the car started doing it again.

After searching around on the forums, I then checked the IAC. It was right around 30 ohms on all 4 coils. Cleaned it off a bit and stuck it back in. Again, the car ran great for about 15 minutes and then the car started doing it again.

So basically, when the computer is reset (from removing the battery to get at these parts), the car will run great for about 15 minutes, then the problem returns. Once the problem occurs, if I let out the gas EXTREMELY slowly I can get the car to idle without shutting off, but it will idle extremely low (around 200-300 RPM). If I then rev the engine a bit the car will stall out again as I let off the gas.

At this point I'm a bit stuck. I am going to try blocking off the EGR valve completely to see if that does anything. Where else do I go from here? I am a bit of a noob when it comes to this stuff. Basic maintenance is no problem and if I have detailed steps I can usually get my way through stuff. Any help is appreciated.

Have you checked your fuel filter yet? Also check your spark to make sure your getting spark on all 4 cylinders!

Thanks, I will check both. The plugs and wires were replaced a few months ago (with stock NGK's). Car runs perfect under load or just cruising in gear, no misfires or anything. So I believe all are getting spark, but I will double check. I will also search around the forums and replace the fuel filter as it has not been done since I purchased the car, so it couldn't hurt do do it.

I just noticed on my break that the if the car is idling (or doing its sorry excuse for idling) and I turn on the A/C the car will die. Shouldn't the IAC do something to compensate for the A/C running? Is it possible that the IAC is bad even though it tested fine with the multimeter? If it was a cheaper part I wouldn't mind just tossing a new one in for the hell of it but it's somewhat pricey.
