my cars a 98 rs automatic. The car seems to drive fine but when I come to a stop light at a dead stop my idle goes from about 600rpms and drops way down to about 200 rpms the car trys to die so I have to put the car into nuatral then goes right back up to normall. So my question is what could be causing this?

Cooling your engine has nothing to do with melting a piston. Too much boost and not enough fuel does. Sounds to me like someone doesnt know how to tune.

To the original poster... Check for vacuum leaks, if it only does this when you have the tranny in gear, check the fluid. If that is the case, something could be wrong with your torque converter.

Automatic dieing in Drive at idle? sounds like a big vacuum leak to me , let her run and check if you hear a hissing under the hood..

k thanxs guys i will check for a vac leak but i have replaced all vacum lines but i will double check everything.

This is the second transmission and its still doing it. The trans is only about 6 months old so i know its not that.

What else do you guys think it could be? Or could it only be a vacum leak?

I believe are 420a's do not have a BISS screw.

My bad, I just assumed you had a 4G63t. Sorry for the misleading information. You are right the 420's do not have a BISS screw. However, you can adjust the idle manually by loosening the 2 bolts that hold the throttle cable in place and pulling the cable back a little and retightening the bolts. Or vise versa. Good Luck.
