Im new to fwd cars so i have not a clue ### could be wrong. I own a 91 rs laser turbo 5-speed. I was driving it one night and it woulnt come out of 3rd gear. The shifter and cables are all moving fine. Is there and inspection plate or something i can take off to look and see wats wrong? The trans did great till it did this. It has no neutral or anything. Its 3rd all the way. But the shifter moves good. Does this mean the shift fork bent or baoke. Any help woud be greatly appreciated. This is my daily driver and cant afford to drive my carbed s10 everyday. LOL. Get 4mpg. Thanks everyone

Yes it does. The cables move fine to. Im thinking that its the shift fork broke or something. I just wanted to make sure that sounded right before i pulled the trany

Sorry i read it wrong. Im not sure if it moves more or not. I dont think so. But i dont remember what it was like before. Is there somthing external that would make it do that?

i dont know how this happend but on my old tranny, the input shaft got all messed up and uncircular and the throw out bearing wouldnt slide back and forth properly to disengage the clutch. that could possibly be your problem.

The clutch is working correctly. Cause i can push the clutch in and thats fine. It just wont come out of 3rd for some odd reason. Im going to just pull the trans and look at it to see. I was hoping someone knew that something external to do.

Unhook your cables from the transmission and try to shift it manually at the levers. If it still doesn't shift, then it's an internal problem. Mitsubishi is frought with problems related to shifting. Most likely its a bearing problem which causes mis alignment and affects the shifting. Not all that uncommon. If you haven't been inside a trans, I recommend taking it to a shop and having it broke open to see the extent of the damage. I've had to go through several for the very same thing. Usually they start with jumping out of gear. However, anything is possible. Let us know what you find when you disconnect the cables.

Good Luck

How much does that usually cost? A good freind of mine owns a transmission shop. So i could probably just buy the bearing if thats it.So just remove the cable and shift it on the trans?

im not sure on an exact price but it shouldnt be too much as long as you pull the tranny yourself and take it to the shop. that way all they have to do is open it up.
To remove your shift cables you should take off your intake and remove the cotter pins that hold the shift linkage. get new cotter pins when you done to be safe ( dont want that linkage to pop off when you slam it into third about to pull on a honda LOL:p )

As a general rule it's sometimes less expensive just to find a good used transmission and replace yours. Repair inside of a manual transmission depending on the extent of the damage can be somewhat expensive. The main reason being that if you are in there, you might as well replace the synchronizers, the bearings, seals, etc. Somewhat akin to an all or nothing proposition.

Good Luck

The cheapest one i can find where i live is 800 bucks. I only paid 250 for the car. LOL. I guess i'll just pull it out and see how much it will be to fix it. If its bad then i'll get another one.
