Car will not start w/o headlights up

I've had this problem ever since I bought this car and it's really becoming annoying. I tried searching but couldn't find anything relevant. For some reason, my 91 GSX will not start without the headlights popped up. WTF I don't know why for sure, maybe a security system was installed at some point that required the owner to push the headlight button to start the car. It doesn't matter if the headlights are on or not, they just have to be up. I figured before I start diving in and messing with stuff, I would ask if anyone here has any ideas. Much appreciated.

I think you're right. Sounds like someone wired the headlight button as a switch to complete the ignition 12V wire. I know this reply isn't any help to your problem, but you've got a good security feature that I wouldn't mess with.

Does it crank and not start or just nothing happens?

I wouldn't mess with it if nothing happens when you turn it over.

You most likely have diagnosed your "problem." I see this occasionally as sometimes it's the horn, turn signal, or whatever you have to turn on to activate the starter. This is so if someone stole your keys or broke into your car they still couldn't start it.
If you have a schematic, you could move that wire to a different activation point of your choice.

One last thing. Every once in a while when I get a car towed in for no start, and especially if they just bought it, I find an after market alarm system that has malfunctioned.

Removing the alarm usually corrects the problem.
