car starts fine, then cel comes on and dies

This is not for the car in my profile, its my girlfiends 92 eclipse gst. bone stock. this problem just started earlier today. When i first start it up its runs and idles fine, then out of no where it throws the cel and sputters and dies. I can hold the gas and keep it running, but it seems like its trying to shut off. The mpi relay clicks when i have it held at 3k rpms and higher. ( ive already swaped the mpi from my car and no change.) the ecu seems to be in good shape, and i could not find any boost or vac leaks. like i said it runs 100% fine at first till the CEL comes on. I have no way of reading codes either.

i thought everyone had an obd2 scanner now days. i would recommend going to autozone and buying at lwast a low end scanner. it will show the code and the internet will do the rest, except for fix the issue for you. if you dont want to buy one ask friends, family, or neighbors. the cel is like an ally standing behind your enemy.

^^^92 is not obd2. OP find a way to find what code its throwing.

How long does it run before dying? I've had bad cam angle sensors cause the same problem.

If you have a analog volt meter you can test it and pull the codes. Kinda sounds like a possible IAC to me. Don't have my repair book with me at the moment but if i remember correctly you have to tap into the top left pin and the bottom right pin on the obd1 connection under the dash and then read the sweep reading.

Now it does it instantly as soon as i start the car, the cel only comes on when it trys to stall, i can hold it at 4k,rpms or higher and it will run and the cel will go out. Its not the fuel pump, regulator, or mpi relay. My next try tomorrow is the ecu. I will also test the cam angle and the iac tomorrow.

It was the cam angle sensor. Thank you guys!

well im wrong, it ran good for like 20 mins with a known good cam sensor in it, then it started doing it again. im at a loss here.

Mine was doing that and it was a loose battery cable!
