OVERHEATING? The issues and their solutions have remained the same- either you don't have enough cool air reaching the rad, there's a cooling system obstruction which is preventing coolant from circulating, or your head gasket has failed and is allowing coolant to be consumed or pushed away from the engine.

Discuss all possible overheating problems and solutions here.

OK,
I just left my house to go over to my GF's,and happen to look down and see my needle right before the red mark. This just happened out of nowhere. I stop the car as quickly as i can, and pour in some coolant(Coolant a little low). Still same thing. Welp im in the middle of the road, and HAD to get it home. Im only 5 min from my house. I decided to try and make it(I really had no other choice). Welp I drive no faster than 20mph, and the temp needle is BARELY into the red the whole way.And occasionaly to the left of it. Am I ok?? Do ya think any damage was done?? And im thinking either thermostat, or water pump. For each of those, whats a round about $$ figure to get replaced?? Any info you have would be GREATLY appreciated!

I am having the same problem coolant is boiling out the overflow. I replaced the rad cap and it hasnt boiled over but still running real hot. So I replaced HG and water pump last night So I still havent ran it yet. Now my HG looked good but im no expert and cant tell you if it looks good if it can still be bad I dont know. I do mnow 2 of my headstuds were roughly 60 ft ;bs And the rest 75 So could have been lifting a little. Also water pump was shot but still was in a workable order. The bearings were falling out and had a terrible grinding noise in it. So any more updates from you guys!

Sounds like your water pump wasn't working like it should...and your HG can be f'd up without visible signs of detereoration. It takes a pinhole size imperfection to cause a problem. Run the car, drive the car, and tell us how the temp reacts with the new parts.

Thanks for the replies. I tried to start it again today, it started. So I guess no major damage to the engine. I probably will need to replace the water pump, cause when I overheated the other day, they engine block has no water, but the radiator has water. :thumbdown

I had a similar problem if that helps... it was a blown headgasket... everytime i'd stop it would heat up like crazy, then i'd take off and it would be fine... just my 2 cents, but i'm glad you fixed the problem :dsm:

i have a problem i have a 91 gs-t auto and when i floor it and it takes off after a couple of seconds my car starts overheating and if i let go of the gas the temp stops going higher what do u think the problem is, any info. is appreciated

ok 1998 gsx, at ile the car is fine, after driving awhile anythin gover lik e3500 rpms, for quie awhile, it starts overheat and the overflow tank fills up alot, a lot of pressure in the system, head gasket replaced, fluifline radiator installed, new t-stat.. all working properly.. still havin gweird overheating issue, have to drive w/ coolant in the car to drive it.. any ideas id appreciate it thenks, only and last option i can think of is a water pump, but it seems to be working fine! please help!!thanx

did this start AFTER you replaced the radiator and thermostat?

did you properly refill the system to ensure you got all the air out?

are your fans kicking on?

Did you ever have the water pump replaced? (recomended when you get the tbelts changed cause your already in there)

ok well, not sure if the water pump was replacd when i did the 6 bolt swap but the overheating happened for the kid who bough my car the day he did, i hadnt driven it yet!! i told him i would help him out and try and find out, he installed the radiator, and ya he burped the coolent properly, the t-stat and radiator where replaced to fix the problem and still there also replaced the head gasket too, still no fix, also the fans com eon normally too... hmmm so i assume the only other option would be to throw in a turbo water pump? i dont see any other way it could be something else so any suggestions u guys could throw at me would be great so i could let him know.. thanx guys!!

It's been almost a week and I haven't had a problem since replacing the fuse. Thanks for the suggestion though.

I'm just going to make this short and sweet since i'm not in the greatest mood.
My car is overheating real bad, like 250 degrees + but it only does it after I come off of the highway. I could drive around town all day with no problem but once I get on the highway and take the exit it starts to overheat like crazy. Then after that the temp with go up real high then down to about 220 then back up real high depending on whether i'm on the gas or not; temp goes down while on the gas pretty good but once I get off the gas it skyrockets again. I'm totally lost as to this point.
I have done:
new radiator cap
new thermostat, 180degree mitsu stat
flushed entire system, took out radiator and flushed some more, cleaned up the fins
new coolant obviously, 70/30 mix
probably some other things i've done already to, but small things.
Also I wired both of my fans to run all the time by a toggle switch. Another thing I did was removed the plastic covering in front of the radiator and I removed the a/c condenser.

Thanks a bunch to anyone who helps out, DSM's rule.. but I haven't even got to drive mine much. :thumb:

PLEASEEEE guys I really need help, my other car is toast so I have nothing to drive to commute to school/work. I'm in real trouble unless I can perform a miracle and fix this car, I was figuring hell it can't be that bad so i'll fix it over the weekend and it will all be good, but of course, NOPE LOL
thanks again

you throwing any cel??

i wish i could help u more but i think you can take it to a near by jiffy libe and they can perfrom a flush and check all components and tell you whats up

Nope, no CEL... ever. I may do that sometime, but i'm trying to do everything myself.
Anyone else think of anything?

ANYONE? please help that's all i'm asking
If your saying to yourself, "man he should have done a search"
well I did and search results were inconclusive. Nothing seemed to relate exactly right to my problem.
thanks in advance, again

If it helps at all, i'm dumping coolant out of the overflow bottle on the highway, even before I overheat I believe. I just know that I covered my friends car in anti-freeze while he followed me on a test run in case I broke down.

If i still wanted over heating problems i would just kept my supra! This is teh 2nd time that myc ar overheated at idle..the 1st time i looked it up here, bought a new radiator cap and thermostat, problem went away, then today when i was installing my subs, i notice coolant on the floor..so i run a look at my gauge its at hot, i turn off the car, pop up the hood and i seen my coolant resivior is cooking, bubbles , all that hot stuff! Wtf can this be?? Im pretty sure its not a Bad Head Gasket cause i went through this before, theres no coolant burning up at start up, car starts up perfect, theres no coolant leak at all, no coolant leaking from the timing belt side. the fans turn on automaticly...im running out of ideas..i thinking maybe its the fans because when it was burning up the fans werent on... i need help any advice???? bad thermal swicth?? or jus a evil eclipse? or do i have a habit of buying overheating cars?
thanks for your time

Can check the fan by swiching on the A/C (both should go on). Or can add a jumper to the fan relay (fuses in engine compartment).

Can also make sure the Rad (overflow) is filled to spec and that all plugs (temp sensor screwed in Rad and fans) are secure.
