OVERHEATING? The issues and their solutions have remained the same- either you don't have enough cool air reaching the rad, there's a cooling system obstruction which is preventing coolant from circulating, or your head gasket has failed and is allowing coolant to be consumed or pushed away from the engine.

Discuss all possible overheating problems and solutions here.

OK,
I just left my house to go over to my GF's,and happen to look down and see my needle right before the red mark. This just happened out of nowhere. I stop the car as quickly as i can, and pour in some coolant(Coolant a little low). Still same thing. Welp im in the middle of the road, and HAD to get it home. Im only 5 min from my house. I decided to try and make it(I really had no other choice). Welp I drive no faster than 20mph, and the temp needle is BARELY into the red the whole way.And occasionaly to the left of it. Am I ok?? Do ya think any damage was done?? And im thinking either thermostat, or water pump. For each of those, whats a round about $$ figure to get replaced?? Any info you have would be GREATLY appreciated!

I have the same issues, I have no leaks and think my coolant is boiling over, no leaks, and new water pump, so when I get free time I'm checking thermostat, radiator cap, and what else is their to check..

Hey guys, I'm looking for some help. I found a 96 gst with 140k on, completely stock. It is in really good shape but have an overheating problem. It only overheats on the highway though. Coolant looks good, oil looks good. It doesn't smoke. The kid that owns it said he had some one do a compression test and the results were 165, 175, 155, 175 but I'm not sure if they botched the test because I wasn't there. From my understanding it doesn't lose coolant till it overheats then spills out the overflow. Any ideas on what this could be? Should I stay away from the car or could it be an easy fix?

It could be the radiator, water pump, thermostat, coolant and air in the system. I'm sure theres more but that's all i can think of right now. and 3000 for a 96 seems like a lot since its overheating.

oh yes and fans

Only a few things it can be, a thermostat that is failing and not opening at the proper time, a water pump that is nearly toast and can't push enough water through the system. A radiator that is clogged and can't let the water pump push the coolant through and cool it fast enough. A blown head gasket that is letting exhaust into the coolant track and making it much hotter liquid. Fans not coming on when they are supposed to. That pretty much sums up all the problems of the cooling system.

Look for bubbles in the coolant overflow, milky colored oil. White discoloration under the oil fill cap (whitish goo). That will help you find out if its a blown head gasket. Then take the thermostat and remove it, put the thermostat housing back on and drive the car again. If the car no longer overheats, its just your thermostat. If it continues to overheat. You could be looking at a bad water pump.

I thought about going down there and doing a block test but its 3 hours away. And the oil and coolant looked good.

Sounds like a thermostat not opening to me. bsbllfit7 has the right idea, just pop that thermostat out and let us know how it goes!

if u have a squeal at high rpms like when u shift it could possibly be the water pump going bad the thermostat is deffinitely a possibility too

Check the upper and lower hoses. The lower hose should be hot, the upper hose will be hot as well. if the upper hose his cold you have radiator blockage. If the upper hose is real hot possibly thermostat. There should only be a slight difference in temp from the upper to the lower. Check to see if the fans come on, turn on the a/c and see if the fans work.

3000 for an overheating car? sounds perty steep to me. Best thing to do is have it block tested if it passes its simple bad fans/water pump/thermostat/radiator/radiator cap. I would not get the car for that much or trade your truck without block testing it. if you cannot get it block tested see if someone has a pressure tester and pressure test the system. No evident leaks during pressure test? then Let it sit under pressure for a few hours or so. check it every now and then if you have a blown head gasket it will leak pressure and push into cylinders and smoke when you start it up.

personally i dont like the aftermarket wings and bodykits and taillights. i like plain stock and clean, thats when a dsm looks its best. but if you get that if i was you id throw some bigger rims on it and lower it

I'd like to do that but I live up a gravel road out in the boonies so that wouldn't work. When I move I prob will.
