OVERHEATING? The issues and their solutions have remained the same- either you don't have enough cool air reaching the rad, there's a cooling system obstruction which is preventing coolant from circulating, or your head gasket has failed and is allowing coolant to be consumed or pushed away from the engine.

Discuss all possible overheating problems and solutions here.

OK,
I just left my house to go over to my GF's,and happen to look down and see my needle right before the red mark. This just happened out of nowhere. I stop the car as quickly as i can, and pour in some coolant(Coolant a little low). Still same thing. Welp im in the middle of the road, and HAD to get it home. Im only 5 min from my house. I decided to try and make it(I really had no other choice). Welp I drive no faster than 20mph, and the temp needle is BARELY into the red the whole way.And occasionaly to the left of it. Am I ok?? Do ya think any damage was done?? And im thinking either thermostat, or water pump. For each of those, whats a round about $$ figure to get replaced?? Any info you have would be GREATLY appreciated!

Ok, I have burped the car. Nothing (didnt expect anything) no extra air bubbles

Ive cleaned out all the coolant to the car.

It looks like it all came out, tons of it.

I put everything back together and put new coolant in about 40 anti / 60 water

It looks like the sender (oen connection at the bottom of the thermo housing)
has a very badly cracked wire. Im going to see if i can get a new one from pick a part and see just by luck is that is what it is. Some strands are broken so its quite possible its not getting a real reading.

Yea man, if it is showing 50% upon a cold start, your temp sender is busted. My car does the same shit...it will be normal temp when I am driving then all of a sudden it will shoot up to 3/4 then back to normal. The needle moves so fast, it couldnt be overheating issue. Thats why I ordered a real temp gauge :)

I've seen a bunch of the adapters on ebay for cheap under $20.

Example:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/28mm..._Accessories&hash=item2a079132f5#ht_500wt_956

*Just not purple*

Then I can pick up a nice gauge from the store.

I see a number of different sizes like :

30mm
32mm
34mm
and so on

what would be the specific size for our application?? And where would be the best place to mount it for the most accurate reading??

thats what i said... get a good aftermarket one..!!!! i had the same problem... but it went all the way up..!!!

Wow, after all that, I replaced the entire sensor at the bottom of the thermo housing and that was it. Looks like the old one had a dent in it on the inside (how that happened I dont know) and it must have killed it. The new one seems to be ok though....

Thank you for your help everyone! Just goes to show that it can always be the part that you least expect!

Now if I can just get the issue of the oil pressure not dropping I can finally drive it!

Is the oil pressure really dropping or is the gauge telling you that? Because the stock gauge SUCKS....seriously, it's horrible. Mine has never worked right in either DSM I've owned.

I think its actually a lifter tick :ohdamn:

The head that I got came assembled but from what I heard maybe its been sitting too long and now I have to take it all apart again and do something to the lifters..

I have this issue posted on another thread i started, as it doesnt really bear relevance to this issue tho

if you're still using the 1mm stock lifters, enjoy that noise for a long time, or get some Seafoam, which will help for a while.

I combatted this by doing the oil head port mod with 3G lifters.

Good luck.

The Lifters will make noise for awhile .. You said brand new head. If it is new Lifters also (Hopefully) the car needs to run for a while to pump them up. usually a spin around the block will help.. if u reused old lifters and didnt bleed them down that may be another issue ..

hey buddy mark this thread as resolved! and congrats on the fix

cant figure out why. stuff i know is working:

mishimoto radiator
tstat (at the worst, its stuck open, so that wouldnt be why its overheating, but the water doesnt start under tstat cap til it gets to certain temp)
mishimoto 14" fan
no leaks of coolant

am i running a bad mixture of water/coolant? what else could cause my car to top 230 degrees?

Is it low on water? or maybe there is an air bubble in there some where. I know when ever I have even the slightest bit of air/low water the temps will shoot way up like that.

that doesnt mean you have all air bubbles out because i would definatly say AIR/STEAM BUBBLE get a non contact temp gun and check upper radiator hose see if the temps match

When was the last time time you ran a coolant flush? Simple question but have to ask.

Also, pop your hood and make sure your fans are coming on. I found a collant hose had a pinpoint leak that sprayed on the fan wires and eroded them.

fans come on all the time per dsmlink, and ive been changing the coolant constantly because the stupid car wont hold coolant. i noticed once its filling up the overflow tank, if its the head gasket this car is getting parted out.

It just might be your HG... Hope not, but sounds like it..

After a good run when you park it, do you find coolant drips/ have you checked for leaks? SImple question, but again worth asking. Also, can you smell coolant in the cabin? Have you checked the large coolant house that comes from underneath the front of the block? That is where I had my leak, and it was small but it cost the car's previous owner a new radiator.

Let us know, and good luck with it!
