OVERHEATING? The issues and their solutions have remained the same- either you don't have enough cool air reaching the rad, there's a cooling system obstruction which is preventing coolant from circulating, or your head gasket has failed and is allowing coolant to be consumed or pushed away from the engine.

Discuss all possible overheating problems and solutions here.

OK,
I just left my house to go over to my GF's,and happen to look down and see my needle right before the red mark. This just happened out of nowhere. I stop the car as quickly as i can, and pour in some coolant(Coolant a little low). Still same thing. Welp im in the middle of the road, and HAD to get it home. Im only 5 min from my house. I decided to try and make it(I really had no other choice). Welp I drive no faster than 20mph, and the temp needle is BARELY into the red the whole way.And occasionaly to the left of it. Am I ok?? Do ya think any damage was done?? And im thinking either thermostat, or water pump. For each of those, whats a round about $$ figure to get replaced?? Any info you have would be GREATLY appreciated!

:aha: I'm thinking that it has to be one of these (1) The compressor bearings or clutch is worn causing an load on the engine which is causing the car to overheat. (2) Low freon, causing compressor to turn on and off at a high rate, causing it to create a load on the engine.

Yup, coolant's moving, water pump works - that was one of the first things I check.

Have you hooked a logger up to see just how hot the coolant will get?

Nope. Don't know anyone with a logger in town. There are many 2 other DSMs in town and no one has a logger.

You need to either get a logger or get a coolant temp gauge. Guessing off the stock "gauge" is extremely silly to say the least.

alright here is the deal.

First its a 90 talon tsi fwd

Last night i am driving my car home. I had just bought it everything was fine then all of a sudden i start overheating bad. I pull over let it cool down and what not. I drive it to a place where i know can look at it.
I pop the hood the engine is smoking a white smoke. I take a look at the situation. (i know nothing about this car i just bought it).

There is a hose that the "coolant" cap is connect too that is just hanging. Not the small one but the bigger one on that cap.

Another hose is just hanging too. It comes from the back of the engine back down on the left side of the car.

Thats all i could see that was disconnect and i don't know where those go. Please someone help. I hope i didnt ruin anything cause it ran really hot for awhile.

Also the car seems to be idling now at like 1500rpm.. If anyone know what seems to be wrong or where those cables are or any type of fixes that would be great!

Thank you!!!!

I had the same exact problems with my 91 when i first bought it a month ago. With this old of a car, and depending if the person was driving it and how often he was, you should probably start replacing the radiator hoses as well as the radiator cap. Make sure coolant is actually flowing through the radiator by testing your thermostat, or even better buy a new one as they are very cheap (<$10).

thermostat is stuck open or something

That would actually keep it cooler, as the coolant would always be recirculating through the radiator, the thermostat doesn't open until the coolant in the motor reaches a certain temperature.

If the thermostat was stuck open the car would probably never reach operating temperature in the winter, as the coolant would always be circulating through the cold cold radiator.

I was just about to say that. My advice...Replace your thermostat as well as your cap and report back. O and get a coolant overflow bottle

alright i will try to replace the thermo.

Quick question... with that all happening would it start smoking? cause thats what it was doing.. It was a white smoke. Why would it smoke?

If u dont have a coolant overflow bottle, the excess coolant will spew out of that hose all over your engine compartment creating white smoke

You probably don't need to replace the thermostat, but since it's so cheap you might as well anyway. Try to get us a picture of the second hose that's not connected to anything, it probably spilled all of your coolant on the ground and caused it to overheat.

Just hope that it didn't get too hot and cause the head to warp. You need to fix your hose routing then do a compression test.

okay i changed the themostat and the same thng happened. There is a belt whinning noise when you turn the car on and then it goes away after like 10 seconds. Could this be the water pump?

Also here is where the un attached hose comes from
<a href="http://s88.photobucket.com/albums/k195/bobgoblin32/?action=view&current=IMG00072.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k195/bobgoblin32/IMG00072.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

and here is it.. i just placed it to see the open end.. Not sure where it goes.. I pulled it up for the picture it was laying down below towards the intake.
<a href="http://s88.photobucket.com/albums/k195/bobgoblin32/?action=view&current=IMG00073.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k195/bobgoblin32/IMG00073.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

any suggestions on any of it.

That definitely looks like the overflow hose.

How about a couple more pictures? Preferably a few of the coolant cap area.

Umm no its not.

Its either to the heater core or to the Throttle body for the FIAV. Probably to the TB.

but like the other poster said be safe flush the system get a new thermostat and rad hoses and your set.

It is in fact the TB hose as PIMking stated. It's not quite large enough to be a heater core hose. Do all those steps you shouldn't over heat again.

Well i changed the thermostat. Does the thermo need to be facing any certain direction? cause i sat it in there and twisted it alitle. And i connect the hose to the throttle body.. which is right where that green coil is by the intake right???

Well i did this and i still overheated and started smoking. The smoke was coming from both the near the temp gauge and near the right side of the engine.

could the water pump have gone out?

and when u say new rad hose are you talking to the big one going from the rad right? what size is that hose?

thanks for all the input
