pull the head and check the damage to the valves, pistons, etc and decide from there. sounds like a good time to upgrade some parts

Looks just like my head when I pulled it. Wait till you flip it over to see the valves. Get the head rebuilt or possibly get a new one from like clearwater cylinder heads. I got mine from BJ and I would NOT recommend going that route unless you have time to waste. How did your car skip timing? If you need help or have any questions just ask and I'll try to help. Heres a link I usually send to people in this situation...look it over:

Looks like the classic crank-gear-ate-the-teeth-off-the-belt syndrome. You did a compression test before pulling the cam cover? What valves weren't bent, are. Wasn't there a bit of noise?
How'd all that sand get on the cam sprocket?

Same thing happened to me on the way to the shootout last year. The teeth separated themselves from the belt. You'll probably have some cracked valve guides and need all new valves. Depending on how fast you were driving, if it died immediately and/or if a valve broke off in there, your pistons might have survived. I just have a little kiss on each piston.
