Quick question, when i did my rebuilt i ended up removing all my emission vacuum lines, charcoal canister ect... For the EGR valve i just left it on and capped the two nipples on it. I'm going to order the block off plate but I've been driving it like it is (just capped) for about a month. Does just capping it hurt anything, or does it really require being removed and blocked off?

Yes it shouldn't leak, as long as the egr is not stuck open. Just buy a block off plate and call it a day , if you decide to make one then try to use a fairly thick piece of metal .. nothing too thin.

Quite a few people have noted that installing a block-off plate greatly improved how the car ran. If the valve has no vacuum/pressure to keep it in position, it could be pushed/pulled open and create a large leak in the intake.

I would highly suggest blocking it. It can be as easy as cutting up an old soda can, or as hard as paying $10 for a decent plate off eBay.

I made mine out of 1/4" Aluminum I had laying around. Works great, costs nothing and you can

I went out to a yard and found a bunch of busted up 1.8's with blockoff plates installed. 49 state Federal 1.8 DSM's didn't need the EGR. California ones had the EGR plus the EGR temp sensor.

All totalled about 10 bucks.

Went to the auto parts store, bought some gasket material, used the plate to trace out a gasket and all is good.

Snitched them all and have them on both of my DSM's.

I second the 1.8 cars coming with oem blockoff plates. I got mine out of a junkyard, was actually given to me. Easy and cheap (well free for me)
