My car had been sitting for about a year because it wouldn't start. I replaced the battery and alternator and battery clamps and now it drives fine. I went to get it inspected but they told me that the sensors hadn't gone through all their checks (emissions inspection), The guy gave me a checklist of different driving conditions to do and I've done them all. I've been driving around for a month now and today it still wouldn't pass. The sensors keep showing "not ready" on the mechanics computer. There is even a test that you have to let the car idle for 5 minutes and I did that and that sensor wouldn't even pass! What could be wrong? Bad ECU? The check engine light is not on. I've taken it in 4 times now. I sure hope someone can help me. It makes me nervous driving around with an expired tag and emissions sticker in the window. I drive 30 minutes to work to and from everyday on the highway. My car is a 97 gst.

If any sensor fails your car will not be ready for the readiness monitors. They need to be specific, and if there is a code, tell you what sensor is causing this. I'd get a tune up first, and other than that it is probably one of the o2 sensors failing.

Which monitor is failing? They should have given you the VIR. It will say not ready for testing next to the problematic monitor.

i cant pass either i have a thread on here and noone has helped me. i know that the CEL light isnt on but id have autozone reset with OBDII scanner and drive it for awhile and like the guy said before me tune up then id pour some lucas in the tank too. hope this helps!

Might be worth while to test your sensors if you can, I would probably look at the engine coolant temperature sensor, it can start to go bad but not throw a code and make your car run rich. The O2 sensors would also be a good culprit like the others said too. Esspecially if the car has just been sitting.

I've gone though at least two tanks of gas since I got it running. I've been driving it for three weeks now with well over 600 miles. It drives fine but all the sensors are in the "not ready" when I take it in to get it emissions inspected. I did find a thread on here where you can possibly be exempt from emissions. I might try that.

I dont know if the mechanic will let you do that. Ive run into a situation when emissions testing a car here in PA. I hooked the car up to the machine and it wasn't ready for testing, I then remembered that the owner only drove 3000 miles since last inspection:ohdamn:, so i wrote him an exempt sticker.... Months later, the auditor came in and found this record. She drilled me with questions about why i did that and had the suspicion i gave him the sticker because I didnt feel like fixing the car. I had to call the guy back up and have him bring the car in for her to look at. Thankfully his monitors were set, or she would have taken the sticker....

have you tried another place that gives out inspections, maybe a mom and pop shop type of a thing. Some places aren't as strict as others , just so you can get that sticker and use your car. so you could have more time to use it and figure out what the problem really is.

Yeah, the place I'm going to is pretty much a mom and pops. The only thing they do is plug there computer up to my ecu. They don't check anything else, like the fact that my blinkers aren't working right now ### I probably need a new switch.:D
