Have a 98 black box came out of a 98 Tsi. For some reason it will not flash, have tried everything. Different cables and software, any help would be great. The chip number is the correct chip mh7202f and has the h2 processor. I'm stumped

What's up bro, ya it's weird no error codes or anything. Car runs fine, I'm not sure about logging. It's actually a friend in mainland and I'm just trying to help him figure it out. He had two well known tuners try and said they are clueless as to why it won't flash. I wasn't aware a 98 black box with the proper chip and numbers on case wouldn't flash. Thanks

I'd check the logging capabilities first. Logging only uses one of the bus so at least you'd know that one works for sure. I've read on here that a simple loose connector on the diagnostic connector can negate you form using the flash port

See post 635 on: http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/tun...st-flashed-dsm-ecu-98-99-flashing-faq-22.html

As for if it can be flashed, I've only heard of this from Ceddy himself:
Some Mitsu cars switched to the 7203 CPU in late 99 to 2000.

But every black case DSM I've seen has the normal 7202 CPU. Its mostly the Evo5/6 guys that have to be careful and check the CPU.

If you want to check the CPU, it should say MH7202F.
If it says MH7203FA you have the newer, not compatable CPU.

CPU is the largest black square on the board.

By the looks of it you have the right one, just out of sequence

You mean like the 2.0 open port cable, have tried just about every cable option. I've been informed it could be locked, but can't you unlock it with ceddies Ecu flash unlocker. Which was tries but still nothing.

What knoch, make sure u have the reflash connector connected. It's probably overlookoed a lot

And not to insult intelligence here, but the reflash is right behind the obd2 plug...small and white

No, the problem I was referring to is the pins on the actual OBD2 port on the car. It could simply be that the connections aren't getting a good contact to the port. Check the wiring behind the OBD2 port to see if any are loose or disconnected. Either way, try logging first see if that works. Like anything, you need to learn to walk before you run, do one step at a time to diagnose the problem.

I'm also assuming you've connected both the flash port (the one that connects to the openport 2.0 via stereo plug and then connects to the white connector behind the OBD2 port) and the OBD2 port of the openport itself to the OBD2 port on the car, since experienced tuners tried it, as the others have mentioned.

Thanks for the help guys. This is actually to help a friend I sold the Ecu to. He can't figure it out and said he even had two tuners there trying. They claim it just can't be flashed, It doesn't make sense to me. All that you guys have said makes perfect sense to his situation. The car runs on Ecu it will allow connection to evoscan, but will not flash. I'm personally on link and have no plans to go any other way. From what I've read and learned about black box ecu's. Seems pretty easy to flash if you have everthing hooked up correctly, and the right ecu.

Is the car the ecu installed on a 98 or 99 with a reflash connector? If it doesn't have that reflash connector, you have to make one

Ya 98 gst. He gave up on it already, and went with a aem setup for the big bucks(ouch LOL). I issued a refund for ecu and he will send it back. When I get it I'll throw it back in my talon and flash it to confirm once again it works, then I guess resell or just keep it for future builds. He says they tried everything known to man to get it to work but couldn't, oh well.

Did they ever check to make sure the battery had proper voltage. I've seen Evo 8 ecus that wouldn't allow you to do anything to them just because voltage was low.
