I had a 92 Laser RST. It was FWD. I sold it tho bc i joined the Army. Now i have some money and looking to buy a new car. I loved my 240sx but i loved my laser. I wanted to get a 2g if i did get a DSM. I dont know what to so i think i will ask some fellow DSMer's. It is so hard!

it all depends on if you like to jump on bandwagons and swing from the nuts of the latest fashion trend. Once its over the car you paid 4+ k for is only worth a couple grand.

verdict

240/drifto/kokie/zukini/dori dori band wagon is ghey

Just get a DSM faster, nicer looking, easier on the wallet, and like they said the 4g63 is a turbo block, so its bulletproof as is...And if u really war RWD get a rx-7 they better and faster than nissans 240 i sold a dsm then got a rx7 and i love the RWD thing but then went back to DSM. And will always be a DSMr

I bet most dsms u saw with rust were awd, and spend there winters kicking ass while the 240 rwd was sitting in a garage ### it wont grip in the snow.LOL

My 1g AWD DSM spent its life in IL. Guy I bought it from used it solely as a winter beater (Drove it home in Sept with Bridgestone Blizzaks on it and a locked center diff) and it's clean. Someone took good care of her. :)

What's American in this Debate? Nissan and Mitsubishi are not domestic makes.

Come on man DSM is as american as it gets LOL. Sorry to mislead you I meant that the talons, lasers, and eclipses are same cars. I have no respect for the 240 because it is way too played out where I live and they are ricey. But the things that people do with all the swaps and interchangeble nissan parts is pretty amazing.

WTF.To say a DSM originated in America is a fail. IN JAPAN,It was used in pre-lancer models as a SOHC, before it became a DOHC. DSMs can be as ricey as any other 240 out there, it depends on the owner. IMO, there are more riced out eclipse than 240s, ever since the fast and the furious.

^^^LOL

1. Manufactured in Normal, Illinois. They were exported to japan with different injectors.

2. Diamond Star Motors was a joint venture between the american borne company chrysler and Mitsubishi.

So a parent company is one of the big three in the US and ALL DSMs were built in the US.

fixed it for you.

who needs snow tires anyways?

Have you ever even had a set? It's night/day difference.

Grand pricze winner!

you havent really stated your goals
daily driver, drift car, show car, snow car.. etc...

i owned a 96 kouki and a 97 zenki 240sx...
for looks they arent much unless you put a kit on em
i never spend $ unless it ups performance so that woudl have never happend for me

2G GSX is sweet looking right from the factory and AWD is very nice
however maintenance and rust are more likely an issue.
factory motor is pretty good but it has it limitations

240sx motor is pretty crappy unless you build and turbo it
dont wast $ on an SR20 - go with a LS1or 2JZ swap is the way to go for a 240sx
plenty of engine bay room and its been done enough that there are kits and info available. there is also R14 kit that take the RB26 and transplants the AWD as well, but buku $$ and RB26 is much more costly to build in the USA.

240sx is a bigger car on the inside and personaly fits me better im 6'1"
handeling seems better also (other then in the snow)

they are total differnt platforms so its really up to what you are looking to do

for me, i just picked up a 2G gsx for with winter and for a lower power daily driver..

my 240's were gonna be 2JZ powered 550 -650 RWHP and all day reliable
but not like you are really gonna draily drive that kinda power either..

all my 2JZ stuff is now waitng to go into a 87 Starion TSI (another fine looking from the factory car)

either way good luck, just figure out what you really want to do with your car, or you will waste money on the wrong paths...

Think i will go with 97-98 Tsi or 97-99 Gsx i would prefer a talon tho i think they look better. Man i see a targa top one today, it was sexy as shit. The guy said it was custom but it looked awesome.

i think the only way to build a structurally safe targa would be to start with a spyder convertible. find a junk gs and cut it up and weld up to the Spyder- then convert the spyder to GSX status and now you are talking!

my dream car would look like a 2G, with targa of course, powered by the mighty
2JZ mated to a beefy AWD system and as reliable as a toyota... :thumb:
too bad no one will ever build that car from the factory

my vote is a 240SX powered by a 4G63T :p

never seen anyone fit that engine, i dont think its very compatible with the dashboard.

...what? what does the dashboard have to do with a motor swap..? adding some sort of custom gauges would be the easy part of the swap.

Ive seen 4 or 5 build threads of some online...specs of the 4g63 and sr20 are quite close, and mount in with conquest/mighty max motor mounts.

4g63s are being used in quite a few random swaps lately.

Well i had this same exact issue and didn't know which to chose. In the end the deciding factor is how much money will be poured into the car.

With a 240sx the stock engine is Rubbish unless you turbo it, which will run you about 3k done right, a lot of people opt for the SR20DET swap, but i've always disliked that engine because it costs you up the wazoo and doesn't put out impressive enough numbers. So in reality if i had 5k and had a 240sx i'd make the KA24DE into a DET and be happily pushing out larger numbers than the SR20.

Now that brings the issue right along to the second point. What if i had 5k to spend and a choice of cars? I'd choose the AWD DSM every time. AWD is just that good, and the 4G63 engine will get much further with that money that a KA24 can (and obviously further than the rubbish stock SR20).

So now it comes down to the price of the actual car. A 1G AWD DSM in good condition will run you about 2k where i live, a 240SX around here would be closer to 1800 for a good S13 (both are 5spd of course, non of that automatic nonsense). Now to get an S14 would ramp it up to 3-4k which is the same as an AWD 2G DSM. SO in reality the prices are the same. The one thing that woudl make me choose the 240sx is if i wanted a drift car. But i don't and thats why i have a DSM.

Where do you get your parts from? I have put turbos on 240 and the parts only cost me 900-1000 depending on where I get them from.. Also I have a friend that is putting down close to 450 on stock rebuild.

You make it sound like that doesnt happen here?? There are plenty of dsm guys do the SAME THING :p

To the OP: You came to a DSM based forum asking if you should buy a 240 or dsm..
I think you subconsciously want a dsm, because no matter how people may compare pro's and con's, everyone here still has a dsm and the vote here will be for a DSM over a 240..

My friend is debating the same thing. I tell to get a DSM over a 240. He really likes them, which i agree they look pretty nice. A stock DSM is faster than a stock 240. He was on a 240sx forum and some posted a simalar tread. of course on the 240 forum, most said 240 is the way to go. I STRONGLY DISAGREE. Unless you get a stock turboed 240, your gonna need to rebuild the block to make some power( a fun amount:D). The money you would spend to rebuild the block for boost, you can make a DSM way faster. You can still drift in AWD (if thats what you would like to do) and you get better traction. Plus a little bit of rallying if you feel like it. IMHO DSM all the way.

I did think about it and man the 240 alone will be 3000-5000 for car plus another 2800 for motor and tranny. Thats nuts. Dsm can go 1000-5000 in good shape and already turbo. So no i am look for a eagle talon 2g.(97-99)

Well, you can't go on a DSM site to ask if you should get a DSM or.. pretty much anything. We're all on here because we LOVE DSMs. If you go on a 240sx forum they'll all be bias towards the 240sx. And if you ask on a honda forum they'll just be jelous haha
