I bought a used 6 bolt oil pan for my swap. It arrived via UPS and there was a crack about a half inch long right inside where the gasket would go. It looks like it was cracked during shipping. I'm just wondering if it can be welded to hold the oil like it should? Or am I out $30?

shit... send it back to them!!! and tell them to give ya another one or get your money back OMG

If you own a welder, hell yeah, weld it. It's not rocket science. If you are going to have to pay someone, send it back. I've got two in my garage if you fall on hard times.

You MAY want to read the rules about sigs...

I would contact the seller and see if you can get your money back, unless you have a welder. Then just make a quick fix.

Was the box badly damaged? It would take a pretty hard bang to crack and oil pan during shipping

The box was ####ed up, and I have friends that weld so they can do it for at the most $5. So, is it safe to weld it? It is a crack that runs through where the gasket goes and maybe a half inch along the inside rim inside the gasket.

You can't just weld an oil pan with a welder. The metal takes on oil over the years though its pours and try as you might the oil will always come to the top while welding it and cause holes in the weld and another leak.

The only way to properly repair and oil pan and yes you can do it and use it fine is by welding it with a set of torches. You need the extra heat from the flame which burns the oil off as you are adding rod to the metal pool while filling the crack. I have welded lots of oil pans and the torch method is the only way. If someone just tries to mig/tig/arch weld it the pan will still leak.

No JB weld is not a good idea its not fuel/oil safe and will deteroirate and leak as well. You basically have two options torch weld it or get another pan.

Thanks alot, so basically while welding it, have another torch or the spot being welded to burn off the oil as it comes to the surface?

What you are talking about is brazing, not welding. And a torch will produce less heat.

Anyway, you are right, brazing is the best way to repair it. The reason it cracks is from heat cycling which makes it brittle and crack. Add the intense, sudden heat from a mig or tig and it the crack will either spider or spread. With brazing, you bring the temp up slower which tends to prevent more cracks. You also have better flow of the puddle and less chances of it "dropping" with a torch.

Its called brazing yeah but I refer more to it as welding because its more like welding I don't use a brazing rod or anything like that I just use the same metal rod I would for tig welding. We cut and weld all our snowmobile drag pipes this way.

To answer your question no you do not have another torch to burn off the oil the weld is actually done with the torch. The metal is heated cherry red and then rod is added to fill the crack. You make the rod pool and keep adding rod to the crack as you work your way down filling it in.
