Well I am looking into buying a 97 Eclipse, a friend of mine told me it was a GSX but I havent been able to speak to the owner yet, and it is debadged so thats no help. I looked at the car today and it has a stock muffler, it has one pipe coming out of it, dont GSX's and GST's have a dual exit muffler? Any way this is actually a GSX? Thanks for the info in advance.

its a gsxtrsgs its a super rare car.

seriously a stupid question, stop being lazy and go look at it.

Thanks for being an ass, way to go! I did look at it dipshit, thats how I figured out it only had one tip, It was raining, and i only had a few minutes cause I had to get to work.

Go look at the car again.

1. Go look at the exhaust manifold for a turbo. If yes continue.
2. Get on the ground and see if there is a driveshaft running down the car to the rear. If yes then GSX if no, its a GST.

That's the easiest way i can think of.

A few easy ways to tell if its turbo:

-Open the hood. Look for a turbo ROFL
-Boost gauge
-SMIC behind bumper

To tell if its a GSX, look udner it and look for a rear differential.

OMG are you for real. :confused: WTF :rolleyes:

You don't even need to pop the hood. Just look under the rear end for the differential and driveshaft. If its got it, then its a GSX and its turbo, no ifs and or buts about, but if you don't see the rear diff, etc, then pop the hood to make sure its a GST.

Agreed, that is the best way to tell.

any possiblilty it's not a stock muffler?

If it was ever changed, then yes, there is a distinct possibility it's not stock.
;) :p

And, like everyone else said, looking for a rear differential is the easiest way to check. It that's too difficult, call the VIN into your insurance company.

No one was talking shit to this guy. He asked an unintelligent question and, got his answers. He asked and, i quote "Can this be a GSX ?" and, quote. Sure it can be a GSX but, it could also be gsxtrsgs a super rare car like member fiveSFE said. If he had asked how to tell if its a GSX than that would be a different story all together. When you ask a silly question like that don't expect a serious answer especially if you're considered a registered member on this site and, not some newbie rookie member. The reason why i didn't even bother to tell this guy how to figure out if its a GSX or not like some other people did, is because why bother telling this to a guy that cant figure out something as simple as if its a GSX or not. If he cant even figure out what he's looking at to begin with why bother telling him to look for it in the first place. If he knew what a rear differential or driveshaft is and, what it dose he wouldn't be asking this question. The muffler means nothing you could have a single tip or dual tip muffler on any model.

Hey fallenauthority, sorry about the rude people on here. And if you rude people would read the entire thread before slammin' the guy, you'd see that he only had a second to look at the car in the rain and all he could see so far was the muffler. GEEZ! I swear, it's like you search the threads looking for people to get rude on because it makes you feel big.

Welcome aboard. As stated, I believe the easiest way to tell would be to see if it has a rear differential, since all rear differential cars are AWD and turbo.

Jeez, nice essay on answering a simple question. You know in the time that it took to write this, you could have explained all the different trims of a dsm.

But back to the subject, look for a driveshaft and check under the hood if possible. If you are looking for the side mount ic, then bring a flashlight, it is kinda hard to see even during the day time. It is located on the passenger side in near the foglight.

Did you try checking the VIN# of the car on carfax? That should tell you which model it is and give you a history report of the vehicle, too.

here's a quick vin-check guide for 2G's

ex:

Mine = 4A3AK54F6VEXXXXXX

all 2G eclipses begin with 4A3A, then the 5th character is either a K, X, or L
K indicates FWD
X indicates Spyder
L indicates AWD

after the K, X, or L, there will be a 3, 4, or 5
3 indicates RS
4 indicates GS
5 indicates GST or GSX model

i dont remember what the 4 meant
then the next two (F6 in my case for my GS-T and Y1 for my GS) are the option / trim packages if i remember correctly.

RS = 4A3AK3
GS = 4A3AK4
GS Spyder = 4A3AX4
GS-T Spyder = 4A3AX5
GS-T = 4A3AK5
GSX = 4A3AL5

somewhere there was a guide to this.

anyway, just make sure the VIN # is 4A3AL5

Ok, well sorry that I only had a second to look at it, I have been here for a year, yes. For the first couple months of that year I read up and learned as much as i could about common problems with DSM's and solutions and other info, I had every intention of buying a 97 gst and getting into the dsm scene and learning more. But I had another car fall into my lap for damn near free, a 94 Z28, so i forgot all about DSM's for about 8 months probably, then someone hit me and totalled my car so I decided to try to buy a DSM like I originally planned. Sorry for the lack of common knowledge of what muffler comes on what car, it was a stock single exit muffler. I ask a simple question, worded stupidly, I'll admit, but I had only caught a glance of the car and remembered as much as I could about the appearance, it had the 5 spoke alloy rims, a small spoiler, like GS's come with but I have seen some GSX's with them too, altezza tails and it had been debadged. I actually went back and looked at it last night in detail and found out it was only a GS, I looked for the driveshaft and transfer case and then for the turbo. Thanks to those of you who were friendly, and those of you who werent, I don't care, must be nice to talk shit about people who you won't ever face in real life. Compensating for something?

It's a bit of a moot point now, but a GSX would (generally) also have a leather interior.
Not that you couldn't get a GS or GS-T with leather. But still, no leather, it's also a safe bet it's not a GSX. Unless they downgraded or some such, an option I'm not even sure existed.
