Ok, so i just installed a gates timming belt and replaced the ofh gasket and front main seal. So today i went out to my car to set my timming to 5 deg. I have dsmlink so i connected my laptop to my car, opened dsmlink and then i checked the box that allows you to ground the ecu. So after i did all of that i grabed my timming light and hooked it up and tried setting the timming to 5 deg, but my harmonic balancer just keeps bouncing back and forth just a little. Enough to not let me set it at 5 deg. Also i checked the timming marks and they are all on the marks where they should be at. My question is why is my harmonic balancer twitching instead of being steady, while i am trying to set it at 5 degrees? What are all the causes for this to happen?
 
Unplug that DSMlink stuff and do it how you supposed to do it - ground the ECU lead and do the base 5*BTDC with the timing light on plug wire No.1

... youre doing the 5* BTDC since you're only mentioning 5*, aren't you?

If you're "twitching", belt job isn't installed correctly causing the intake cam for 'float' around where it wants to be.

It sounds like your harmonic damper may be separating. You can remove the crank pulley and look for signs of the rubber ring in the middle separating from the metal. But based on what you're describing I would just go ahead and replace it.

That is exactly what checking the "Ground timing connector to ECU" box does. This makes that step easier.

I would also suggest checking out your damper. Verify that the timing mark is around 10 o'clock when the locating pin for the crank is at 3 o'clock.

hey snowborder whatsup man?yes the damper is in the right position.can my crank position sensor cause this if it has play?i removed it and notice that were the two tabs that go in to the cam seem lose on the shaft with the pin that hold it on.

yes i mean 5 deg btdc.and i checked the timming about 20 times noow and the all line up right with no slack in inbetween all of the pullies on the belt.i cantget any closer with the timming belt.And i will try to ground the ecu lead with out dsmlink.How can i do that

can anyone think of anything else

Does the timing belt have enough tension?
yes all the way around the pullies
 
You could have the right tension, but is the autotensioner adjusted correctly with the correct gap needed between "grenade pin" and the tab on the tensioner pulley that the pin is pushing against?

Also, the tab on the adjuster pulley, is it flat or, is it all divoted out from age in which your adjustment will never be set correctly?

It all has to match to work correctly and properly long before grounding the ECU lead to to base timing.

( and to do the ground trick, it is that little plug in the harness behind the battery with a cap on it. Take the cap off and there is a blade connector inside that you take a jumper wire that has two alligator clips, mounted on each end of the wire and you clip one end to this blade connector and the other one to ground. This disables the ECU to mess with your timing. Then do the timing light thing to get your 5* BTDC thing. )
 
Unless you have an aftermarket crank pulley that is all aluminum you will have a rubber ring on the inside of the pulley. The stock pulleys are dampend and fused together with a rubber ring. I have seen them fly apart before. If you are running an aluminum pulley it will fry the mains on that engine once you throw any power at it.

Don't you love it when vibrations from the motor has no where to go but to the main bearings and crank when they aren't dampened out by the classic and ugly looking stock harmonic balancer pulley?

so is this why i feel a vibration on my steering wheel when the car is at a idle.and i have the ugly looking stock harmonic balancer pulley

.i have one more ? i started up my car and got it to warm up then i grouund my ecu when the car was running and it made the car shut off.i forgot that when you ground ecu you are suppose to shut the car off first then ground ecu.is it possible to burn out a driver or ecu

Unlikely. The "vibrations" that the harmonic damper absorbs are different in frequency and nature than the ones which cause your motor and car to shake. Lots of things can cause excessive vibrations at idle. I would start by looking at the motor mounts. Check if polyurethane/solid motor mounts have been installed. Check the condition of the rubber looking for tears, cracks or other signs of wear or damage. Some other things that can cause the vibration are aftermarket cams, incorrect timing, idle speed too low, just to name a few.

Have you tried to start it since? If it won't start now maybe it just popped a fuse. I imagine much worse damage is possible although I don't specifically know what that might be.

The tensioner rod which extends to push up on the tensioner arm is not the same thing as the grenade pin which is used to hold the rod at a specific compressed position (which fortuitously happens to be within the specified range) during install. ;)

yes i started my car after that and it starts right up.i was just worred that i might of did damage to the ecu in the future because of forceing the ground on that fast with the ecu being powerd at the time

I just want too let everone know that i found out why my timming mark was going back and forth when i was trying to set base timming.Even though i connected with dsmlink and checked the boxs that allowes you to ground the ecu.Will that was not grounding i guess because when i grounded the brown wire that is on the firewall behind the throttle body my damper stoped jumping around.Just want to let everyone know if you try setting your base timming and you try to ground the ecu with dsmlink and your damper still is gooing back and forward and not staying steady i would use the brown plug and ground it that way instead of having dsmlink ground it for you.
 
"Whoops"..sorry on that - meant the gap between the top of the autoadjuster and the underneath of the pulley tang.

But, wondering on if the under neath of the tang is dimpled out due to the rod causing incorrect gap settings?

thanks dsm1g90 just want to let you know that your suggestion help me find out why i was not getting steady timming reading on the damper DSM ROCKSSS:hellyeah:
