I picked up a set of EVO 8-9 springs and retainers with 50K on them for $80 from a DSM buddy. springs are cheap new, but the retainers are not, so i went with these. (for my HKS272 cam install when i do my timing belt).

I opened up the bag the next day and they have gouges on ALL of the retainers from what looks like a screwdriver or something from when they were being removed. They are hit on the beveled tops, and a few on the flat area the spring rests on.

I would like to know if they are JUNK, or can be cleaned up with a file by myself and reused. I would say JUNK because this is critical shit inside my head.

just want to make sure before I get my $80 back, in a nice friendly way.

You might damage the roller rockers using those as is but some of them look alright. You might be able to take a piece of sand paper or dremel fine grit sanding disc to them; remove the burrs of the really ####ed up ones.

I personally would try to get your money back and get new stuff. This is one of the reasons why I never buy used parts anymore, I always end up feeling like I wasted my money or got ripped off.

Personally, I think you will be fine running those. The EVO retainers are made out of an extremely soft aluminum. They are very easy to gouge when prying on them. It doesn't necessarily mean that a ton of force was applied to them. The ones you have pictured don't seem to have any damage on the inside where the valve locks will be. I would just clean up the burrs with some light sanding. I personally wouldn't use a Dremel, it's not needed since the aluminum is so soft.
