Can i use regular gold spray paint and then clear it with the duplicolor clear?

Of course, I painted mine with duplicolor black with their clear coat without really preping them too well and they came out decent and never chipped until this year but they are 2 years old now. Regular spray paint will work though. Goodluck, make sure you prep them well!

Yea i sprayed another pair before with duplicor and came out great! But duplicolor doesnt offer gold, son wondering if i use another brand gold that arent for rims.. Im planing to prep them good sand, and primor clear coat.

+1:thumb: agreed! did it to my 300zx and my gsx, looks good if u prep it good tho, sand down the rim first, ull love ## self even more for doing it other than just washing them, drying them, and then applying paint.

What I did was sparay aircraft remover all over the rims first. This took all of the clear coat off. I let it sit for about an hour. Then wash them off, sanded really well. Rinse. Dry. Now your ready for primer. After primer goes whichever paint you choose, then clearcoat. By the way I'm pretty sure duplicolor makes gold paint. I'm pretty sure I used gold duplicor on mine.

This is my problem too. I want a bronze lip but duplicolor bronze is way too dark. Im going to talk to a powder coat shop and see if its cheap just to do the lip. Otherwise I may try doing a differant paint with the duplicolour clear. I sanded 2 rims down so far, they arent quite done, over 3 hours each!

Any successful paint job is all about prep!!! Here is what I did with my rims

1) Spray on oven cleaner to get rid of all the grease and gunk, after a good washing:boring:
2) Use a good quality paint stripper, not grandmas goo. Let it sit for 45m to 1 hour.
3) Spray off repeatedley, use oven cleaner again just to get rid of all the residue.
4) Spray off with again sem soap repeatedley
5) Use a sem or duplicolor prep agent, use sem or dp tack cloth
6) Sand metal with 320 grit sand paper dry
7) Repair any low spots or minor dings with a good epoxy puty. follow instructions on it.
8) Use a epoxy self etching primer, dp. or I use sem, apply 2 solid wet coats. allow 5-10 m flash between coats.
9) Sand epoxy primer with 400 grit wet or dry.
10) Clean with a cleaner and degreaser, and tack cloths.
11) Use a sandable primer next, spray 3 solid coats, sand with 400, then 600 wet.
12) Repeat step 10
13) Use a good quality paint, If you ain't using a air gun, use VHT, EASTWOOD, duplicolor, plastikote. I would use something with a ceramic or epoxy, or urethane for durability. Use 3 wet coats, allow 5 or so minutes flash
16) Spray on a good quality clear before the color dries. I use 4-5 coats of clear and wetsand it after a couple of days with 1200, 1600,2000 grit. You don't have to do this step. I just want that wet look. If you don't do this step, spray 2-3 coats of clear.
17) If you wetsand the clear, then do this steps. Use a buffer and a verylight rubbing compound, then use a polishing compound, then apply a coat of wax. Or don't apply the wax.Go slow so it don't burn through.
You don't have to go this route, but I find it works best for any wheels.:hellyeah:
