Alright so I just bought another set of OEM taillights planning on blacking them out.
I'll probably spray them with VHT nightshade and clear coat like I did with my marker lights..

But, I'd like to see some eclipse's with blacked out taillights, and what you used.
Thanks!

I never used vht. before I bought the lens tint, I looked around what people were using. and that was the biggest reason I didnt use vht and went with the autozone stuff.

I also did a set of headlights with it, and no purple look.

Mine done with VHT Nightshade:

jaxness, yours are literally perfect. The only difference is I want the shaved eclipse one the back, but thats already done.

Can you run me through what you did exactly? How many coats and stuff.

4lurker, yours also look really good, but I'm probably going to do my center piece too. How many coats did you use also?

Cleaned the tail lights with Purple Power.

Many, MANY light coats. I allowed them to dry about 10-15 minutes between each coat. It wont look that dark as first, but they get darker as they dry.

I honestly cant tell you how many coats I did, but my goal was to get them DARK, not just tinted. So start with a couple layers and stop with whatever makes you comfortable.

You can always go darker, but it is HARD AS HELL to get off, LOL.

Edit: If you look at my pics, my tails look flat black compared to my glossy paint, so I'm taking them to my friend who does professional paint work to have him put a layer of clear coat on them to make it match the car better.

You wet sanded them and stuff first, didn't you? And clear coat after?

No and no.

I probably should have wet sanded them, but they didn't have a problem sticking at all (just clean them really good with a degreaser).

And I edited my last post about the clear coat. All comes down to preference on whether or not you want the flat black look or the glossy clear look.

Mine were clear coated (reason why they're so reflective). I also prepped the lights (clean then wet-sanded). I think I made 3 coats but mine were thorough coats then let it dry. After it was dry, a quick wet sand on the lights again before the clear coat. Applied 2 clear coats.

I've done it with with sanding first. And without on another car. They look the same. Using fewer thick coats helps a little with the glossiness

To get it off, just sand and polish like the headlight restoration

PPG 2 step > all. used this on my STi's tail lights and they came out perfect, i did use a spray gun with compressor but this stuff is easily better than nightshade.

Ive used the VHT Nite Shades on my old Eclipse and my current Talon, and as careful and paitent as I was, they never came out looking as good as the those who posted above me :idontknow: If you are worried about runs, sags or anything like that, I would recommend checking out using a tint film instead: Tail Light Tint Film this way if you ever decide to remove it, you can just peel it away as opposed to having to use chemicals to remove it. Plus if you ever get hassled by an officer of ze law, you could simply peel it off right then and there. Im planning to do this once my car is back on the ground and has a beating heart again. :sneaky:

heres my 2g white eclipse with 3 coats of vht nightshades and 3 coats of clear. The comparison picture of the side by side, is one coat vs no coats.
