for some reason i cannot turn the camshaft freely when i put a set of cam caps on my rebuilt head from 2 other heads it makes no difference. someone lost the original caps...
i didnt think there was a difference, im stumped on this one? im not really positve what year the head is, but id was pulled from a 91 AWD 5 speed talon. but there definatly isnt 90k on it in fact its almost brand new, so it was replaced at one point.

so are there dirrerences between the caps? are they all different (line bored)? how do i tell what year head this is. it does not have a 2.0L stamped into the spot above the water neck.. g67 is there...

oh man.... maybe someone put an elantra head on a awd turbo car? what other identifying mark are there and where to look, i definaly don't want to use a 124hp head
on a 400hp motor..

HELP :talon:

What do you mean? Like align honing the cam caps etc? Or do you mean the actual cams?

Nah the bottom end of the cam bearing caps where the cam sits in.Why what did i call them?.Sh*t my bad i said cam journals.LOL Ive been up for like 23 hours so I'm a little disorientated.

Edit--Here's a picture from my head that came off my parts car.He said the same Sh*t happen to his and they resurfaced it somehow.I have no idea LOL

I have a head out being done right now, due to the porting on it i figured it was worth keeping. Having this done is not much added onto the price of rebuilding the head which you should do when buying one used anyway, so wether you buy a used one and rebuild it, or have one repaired that you already hve and rebuilt it will be about the same.

But if the head has a lot of money in it by proting, big valves etc,,, it's worth having done... if the head is stock, you might as well get a good core and start fresh

I'm not to sure you would want to do that. By machining it you would end up changing the center line of the cam and you would have to do a lot of work to compensate for the cam sitting lower. They do it to mains in blocks but that also changes the center line of the crank if the damage is on the actual block instead of the main caps. Align honing is done by cutting a little bit off the mating surface of the main caps and then they re-enlarge the hole making it a true circle again. In this case I am unsure.

To repair that, the shop would fill the gouge with weld and re-bore the bearings, which would likely be too much expense at this point in DSM history. It's different on cars that don't have a massive supply of heads on the market. However, you may be okay to just go ahead and run that, so long as there aren't any areas sticking up from the gouge. Camshafts are among the most overbuilt bearing areas on anything, and the loading is on the cap instead of the bottom half.
Ask your machinist. Then ask another one.

On the head i have that's bad, the machinist had me TIG in the areas that were gouged before i dropped it off ( said this would keep him from having to remove too much material and that cams would still be within a working range when installed.

But, i did have to take it to my local motorcycle machiist. The guy who did my car engine said he didn't have the correct equipment. The motorcycle guy said he does it fairly often saving street bike heads on track bikes and said my motor wouldn't be much different so i welded it up and dropped it off

I guess we'll see what thte cost ends up being, but i wasn't quoted too high of a price ( 160 - 200 to fix just the cam areas)

Ive looked around on this subjects a bit, and I have even talked to the machine shop about it but Im not 100 percent sure about it. So my head is warped on my 6 bolt 4g and my "new" used head did not come with the cam caps (for who knows what reason) but I have the ones from the old head. Now the machine shop says no way on using the one caps for another head for obvious reasons, but what would the repercussions be if i were to use them, is it really that bad? The reason I ask is because the person I bought the head from will not give me a refund so now i'm stuck with a worthless head. what are my options? thanks

the main problem with using mismatched cam caps isnt as much with the head as it is important to keep them in numbered order on the cam bearing surface, I personally would re-use them and just be liberal with the assembly lube and consider preheating the heat and cap without starting the car, then tourqe the caps again.

Yeah. The cams will seize, snap, hold your valves open and bend them all with the pistons.

Your machinist is an idiot. Or, he can't do the job. You take the "wrong" caps, shave off the surface that mounts to the head, and using the base of the cam bearing in the top of the head, cut the caps to fit the existing bores.

However, the cost may exceed the price of another rebuilt (and, complete) head.

Are Mitsu and Hyundai cam caps the same? The reason being is I have a G4CN [4G67] head and planning to install regrind cams that came from a 2G 4G63 head.
