Camshaft Caps

I am in the process of doing a rebuild.
We just pulled the cams our and I noticed the caps had some scratchs on them.
They aren't huge scratchs, but scratchs none the less. I haven't seen to many people talk about these. Is this something that you SHOULD replace during the rebuild ?
And if so how much does a complete set roughly cost ?

Ask you machinist, but you should be fine. The camshafts have quite a lot of bearing surface, and a good oil supply. However, if you want to replace them, I don't even know if they're available as separate parts. If they are replaced, they have to be align-honed in place. If yours are scratched enough to need resurfacing, the mating surface of the saddles are milled down to reduce the diameter of the bearing, then align-honed. I think the machine work may come out to more cost than another head.

If the cap is scratched, it stands to reason that the bottom half of the bearing is scratched as well, so just replacing the cap won't do you much good. It would help to have some pics.

Use some 1200 wet sanding paper and just shine them up a bit.

Defiant, good point on the re alignment. Didn't think about that one.
Nukefission, believe it or not the bottoms arent scratched at all. Ya kind of wierd there, I figured they would be.
