So I'm going to buy a used engine, I found one close by for cheap... I'm going to pick it up next week.... the engine is said to have less then 30,000 miles on it and its from japan, guy bought it about 3yrs ago wanting to install it in a GS but has since sold the car, so the engine has been in its original shipping crate eversince.

new that im picking up another engine (mine has 150,000) what else should I get for it? I made up a list of things im going to buy after I get the engine, but maybe I can get something else.... what do you guys think? heres the list from dsmparts.com

I just recently lost my fully rebuilt 7 bolt (crankwalk at 3,500 miles) and swapped to a 6 bolt (Buschur Racing short block). I have sitting in my garage a set of Weisco pistons (20 over) and Eagle Rods (H). Only 3,500 miles. Not sure you have any interest, just thought I'd ask! :dsm:

I am pretty sure you can find a 6-bolt motor for the price of that 7-bolt you're getting. If it's not close then consider the risk of beating that 7-bolt crank to hell compared to the reliable and proved motor we all refer as 6-bolts.

Maintanence - step 0 in the tuning guide.

Three years is one hell of a long time for a motor to just sit. Many, if not all, of the seals will be hard and leak. I would personally replace, at least, all of the 'tough-to-get-to' seals while the motor is out of the car.

I believe you should do maintance to the motor before performance. Plugs, wires, belts, hoses, oil, filter, and other things. thats going to cost you $300 plus. If it was my motor thats what i would do first.

Yes, I would have to agree, even though I have some 7 bolt parts to sell. If the cost differential is not much, got with a 6 bolt. I drove my stock 7 bolt for 195,000 miles w/o a problem! But once I re-did all the internals (pistons, rods, crank bearings etc.) and a brand new high performance clutch, crankwalk developed in 3,500 miles! I would suggest you check out a whitepaper you could find on the MagnusMotorsports web page (here is the link> Magnus Motorsports) regarding the crankwalk theory. I believe putting in a high performance clutch exacerbates the problem. If your going for more horsepower, go 6 bolt. If your going for a OEM re-build and the cost differential is too much to justify the swap, a 7 bolt may be OK.
Sure can be confusing, huh!
Both Magnus and Buschur Racing have some good information regarding a 7 to 6 bolt swaps.

wow, so much info... Yea I keep hearing that a 6bolt is the best way to go
one its cheap and tons are always available
and two I read somewhere the 4g63 6bolt was rated the 2nd best 2liter engine ever made

but I'm worried about being able to do a swap like that, sounds kinda major... Its just me and a jr mech and I really dont belive we are up to the task. plus its still my daily driver and I do plan in getting a 91 gsx sometime next year to "PLAY" with... just to have the best of both worlds... hehee

1. Replace ALL gaskets, seals, belts and hoses. I mean ALL.
2.Eliminate balance shafts
3.All new oem timing componets.
4. New plugs,wires,oil filter,fuel filter.

That is where you start. Then worry about other things once the engine is in your car and running.

Also 52$ for shipping is a boost gauge etc...Extremepsi has 7.50 flat rate shipping except for fluids. They have always been good to me too. Maintenance is number one on our cars. People don't do it and they end up on ebay blown motor, half diassembled, and wiring harness cut to pieces to "save weight".
