So I had $1500 to spend on my 92 GSX, now I'm down to $1000.

so far, I've swept through all of the free mods, cured the vacuum fiasco, thrown on a MBC and boost gauge, pulled off useless stuff that was weighing me down, cleaned it up pretty good, blown the oil filter seal twice, killed a battery, watched my alternator die, lost a front motor mount bolt, did a full timing job, switched front half of the interior, replaced the dash, pulled the dash again ( i put a 90 dash harness in my 92 and everything was messed up, replaced a faulty coil pack, taken out the platinum plugs in exchange for some NGK R's, changed all my fluids.... and now it's time to spend $$$.

I'm currently looking to purchase a dejon tool dp,
custom catback w/ (3" hemi resonator)
dejon intake 2g mas setup
evo 8 fmic, with custom mandrel piping
evo 560's
SAFC II
EVO III manifold and O2 housing
and possibly some new struts.

How are your projects coming?

I bought my car (91 GSX) a year ago, and only drove it for the first three months. The last 9 it has been sitting in my garage because I caught a horrible case of "while-I'm-in-there" syndrome during my engine replacement. It was starting to look like a never ending project. I bought the car for $2,500....$6000 in replacement parts/aftermarket parts and 9 months later, my car is finally almost finished! And once it's running, I'm only going to spend more money on goodies :)

Heh...I hope I didn't miss anything "while I was in there" because I'm NOT taking this car apart again, hahaha.

Got my 91 TSi for $1800. Put 3"inch turbo back on, mbc, intake, dsmlink, ported 14b, ported O2 housing, plugs and wires. Then i blew the engine and bought some more "while I'm in there parts". its now over $8000 later and i'm still going to need a tranny and clutch soon. plus i don't have the time to do all this work so its at a shop and should be done wed.:thumb:

I hope it's all worth it.

ROFL ROFL ROFL ROFL
Same here!!!!
I was pulling out of my drive way the other day and my dad heard a big clunk. I didnt hear it but when I got back he looked on the street and it was a rachet that had fallen with my 12mm socket, I was like I'VE BEEN LOOKING FOR THAT!:D :dsm:

I bought my 92 AWD back in 2002 for $3000 with 68,000 miles, and I got the K&N filter and plugs and wires then I thought I should race the car till I blew the engine:cry: . So I did and then had to drop a used engine in. I also suffer from "Whileiminthereitis". Since I decided rebuild my engine(i.e. waterpump seized and I jumped timing); I am going with 8.5:1 pistons, metal head gasket, new valves, a crank scrapper from Mach V, arp bolts(everywhere), eliminate the b.s. again, and new oil pump since it's all taken apart. But now it will be time to get my taxes back I might as well get a bigger oil cooler and go with a kevlar timing belt, and possibly an GReddy BOV. I mean "while I'm in there".:laser:

that's a lot of money

I bought my 90 Talon back in August of 2004 for $3000 with BR 2.5 dp, 2.5 test pipe, BR 2.5 catback, k&n, boost and a/f guage. The motor was just rebuilt when I bought it. Now, I don't even know how much I've put into the car after 1 1/2year of owning it. I thinking around 7 grand and its all paid off already. Check out my mods in profile.

It truly is amazing how much money you can spend, but hey if I have learned any lessons from my 1st 1991 GSX, 20k of mods, is that I had more fun running around beating the piss out of 80% of the cars on the road with my 14b, then the minute amount of time I spent on the road after I started mods due to being down all the time. I still have a friend who is just tickled to keep his car stock and has had no real problems on his 1994 GSX with 180k miles on it, so on this my second DSM I am keeping things modest with a 1990 GSX, I bought it for $500, rebuilt myself with nearly 100% factory internals($125 machine work/maybe $150 in gaskets, etc. I have since bought what I consider the essentials, full 3" turbo back, surprisingly for under $300,Walbro 255 $85, a blast from the past HKS EVC1 $150, I already had a cast t3/t4 manifold with a turbo very similar but a little bigger than a big 16g. 750cc injectors for $240, & lastly I got a steal on a Dsmlink v2 for $320, so I am excited, but no the car is still not running, LOL, but it will be soon, the gas tank was completely varnished, so now new gas tank, but I know a russian guy who has one for $20 =) Personally I hope I never learn my lesson, I just love them, and a minute in my DSM is worth a lifetime in any other car just about.

I hope you get it running soon so we can finally roll together for once like we've been talking about for over a year now. :p

For a 19 year old the amount of money I have spent on transportation (i.e. this car) is ridiculous.

i would look in to a nice clutch and a SS clutch line.....you can have all the stuff above. but with no way to put it to the ground is useless. just my two cents.

haha budget

I bought my 1991 eagle talon TSI AWD with 90,000 miles in February for $2950. It was completely stock except for a new K&N airfilter.

It had:
160 compression on all 4
new oem oil pump
new oem water pump
new oem timming
balance shafts removed
new oem head gasket
arp head stud's
new ngk plug's & wire's
rebuilt head
a/c has been remove
cruise control removed
brand new tire's

I was please with my purchase. It ran beautifully but obviously needed work. It is now june, 5 months have pasted, and I have spent 1700 on the car. All labor done by me.

I needed to replace, the alternator, master and slave cylinders, battery, battery positive and negative couplers, rear hatch lifts/struts, oil leak coming from the oil pump fixed, new brake pads and brake lines, both front axle boots (might even be time to get new axles for the front), radiator w/ fans, headlight housings.

I would not be surprised by the time I am down (DSMlink, new exhaust (o2 housing back), larger injectors, fuel pump, GM MAF, and FMIC) I will have spent total $7000, including the price of the car. Not to mention the interior roof needs work, damn 1g DSM roofing falling apart:banghead:, thank god for a tech article on how to completely redo the upholstery:thumb:.

I don't think there is exactly a budget DSM LOL, its just a never ending hobby. The truth of the matter is I don't think there is a better way for a single adult male with a salary and no debt (Student loans) to spend his money. My parents and girlfriend can and do argue that.

I came to find out is there such thing as a budget project car !!!!! I paid $1100 for my 91 Tsi in 06" just a week before I was going to do the timing belt my balance shaft belt right beore I got into my driveway. While I was having the timing belt done my ecu was bad so I found one from the motoguys, the air box was cut to heck, and then drove it for about 5 months and then a bad rod knock started and it smoked started pouring out the exhaust pipe. So now it is rebuild time right now I have new axles, gauges, stage 2 clutch, flywheel, smic, and all new lines and hoses to put in after I get the engine rebuilt. So I feel your pain Bro. so it does boil down to save, plan, and budget. Good luck and keep us informed

I would probably cry if I added it all up. I got a bad case of "if your doing it do it right". I've driven the car 3 times and the total is over 10k and I still need a few thousand more to finish up. But it should be fun when its done :thumb:

Originally the project was just to replace ...And one thing lead to another.

Oh how I can relate. Just look at part 1 of my blog, and where it's ending up :)

I gave $3k for my car about 3 years ago in really good shape for the most part (flawless interior and very clean body/paint)...I'll have over 10k in it easily when I'm done...but almost everything on it will be new or cleaned/repainted/rebuilt.
