i have a 90' talon tsi awd thats been having gear grinding issues for quite some time now. first it started with slight grinding when i shifted into 2nd gear from first, but the problem was easily avoided if i waited a slight delay before shifting into the gear. it didn't bother me. but after i blew and replaced my clutch, the problem became not only more noticeable, but it spread to 3rd gear. now it's the first 3 gears doing this problem and it's gotten so bad that i had to learn how to shift at precise delayed times to avoid or minimize this grinding. downshifting into these gears is impossible. i can manage into 2nd or 1st if the slow roll is just right, otherwise it's grinding. and when i'm at a stop, sometimes i move at idle (like an automatic trans would)

at first i thought my syncro's were messed up, not aligning to the flywheel and such. but others seem to think it could be my clutch. since i had it replace something could have been bent or put in wrong or screwed up somewhere along the line. the symtoms seems to be persistent with both problems. PLEASE HELP, MY CAR IS GETTING WORSE AND I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO.

ugh, as much as i like the sound of that as apposed to replacing my trans (which i can't find one anywhere) i also really hate the idea of that, because i replaced both master and slave cylinders in the summer, and after numerous failed attempts to return clutch pressure, i just took it to the shop where the guy replaced my clutch and pressure plate. also since i got the car back i've had more "play" in the clutch where it doesn't seem to lift completely off the floor, but still seems to engage/disengage. when i took it back in the guy told me it was the syncro's. but your idea seems pretty probable now that i think about it. so i'll try that asap.

thanks

Sounds like the same thing in my 90 Laser NT.. I've was told that is was the clutch when I bought the car but since then I'm thinking it's the syncro's, if I wiggled it the right way into second I have no problems, but I never blew my clutch so it never got any worse.

also since i got the car back i've had more "play" in the clutch where it doesn't seem to lift completely off the floor, but still seems to engage/disengage.

This makes it sound like worn pedal assembly. Common problem in 1g's especially as old as a '90.

Fix

I know a guy that went through two transmissions before he realized this was the problem.

i re-bled my clutch and got more pressure, took it for a test drive and it was almost perfect, until about 20 seconds into the drive it gradually got worse and returned to the way it was. so with this new theory, i took a look at my slave cylinder (recommended on another thread) and sure enough, theres a leak. I went to S and G today, but they gave me the wrong slave (don't ask for talon tsi awd parts, ask for eclipse gsx) so tomorrow the part will be in and i'll try replacing that. BUT i don't think that will fix the play in my clutch, so i'm REALLY happy that you showed me that link and i thank you for it.

thanks again :talon:

I have a similar problem and I was told by Jack at Jack's transmissions here in Colorado and also by several other people it is my synchros.

Sounds like you have the same problem.:(

so today i put in the new slave, bled the system, and it was ok while sitting on, but when i drove it it kinda did the same thing as before and gradually started grinding, but nowhere near as bad as before. the car is actually kinda fun to drive again. the pedal still doesn't come completely off the floor and i'm looking into taking out the clutch and break pedal assembly as suggested.

any other thoughts anyone? i'm not seeing any leaking from the master or slave. do you think the pedal is the problem?
