Abbotsford,
Heya,

I've got a 91 Talon TSI, and I broke the drivers side axle carrier bearing bolts.....twice!!! What could be the cause?? I'm ordeing the proper bolts from the dealer tomorrow, cause it looks like the first time they wern't stock, nor when I did it. It's actually tough to find the proper strength around here. (My uncle was looking into it for me, and the seem to be special bolts) but I am just wondering what could be causing them to break? They broke just cruising down the highway, not accelerating, or turning, just a straight cruise at 80km/h.

I was thinking maybe motor mounts??? But they do seem ok... gonna really get into it tomorrow after work, it's easiest to go from up top, taking the intake mani off. Getting a drill from underneath is almost impossible.

Thanks

WTF now Im just getting pissed.

Carrier bearing bolts keep shearing off and making it flop down and #### the axle at an angle and leaking out all the gear oil.

I changed the carrier and the short shaft cause the bearing was whooped and I bought a used carrier and short shaft to replace mine with, I just got the car so I have no idea if it did it before this but Im guessing no...

anyone had this happen before? Please I need help this is driving me nuts.

It just happened to me, but it sounds like I have much less experience with it than you. How are you removing the broken bolts from the block?

I had the exact same problem with my 1G. I had to remove the engine to drill out the broken bolts. What a PITA!!!. I used bigger grade 8 bolts to replace them. I thankfully haven't had the problem anymore. If you figure out what the root cause of this is post it so I can prevent from ever having to fix this again.

Does your car have A/C? The stock A/C bracket sandwhiches between the block and one of the axle bracket bolts. If you remove this bracket and fail to fill the gap with washers or the like it will put more stress than normal on that one bolt and cause it to break. The other bolt wont last long by itself before it breaks also. Might want to get a new set of OEM bolts for that bracket as well. The bolts have a unique "nosing" on the end to prevent them from being threaded in to far.

You know what, thats how its happening. Its usually breaking one off and working the other one out through vibration or whatever. I read about that but just I guess was thinking it still had a/c ROFL

Im betting thats what it is though, the a/c has been removed and the bracket is no longer there either.

Awesome news, this weekend that bi*** is getting shimmed.

Thanks a ton man.

You can either cut a piece out of the stock bracket or spend $2-$3 at the dealer for the non ac washer. :thumb:

Well we got her all fixed up today, got the old bolts out of the block by notching them with a dremel to take out with a screwdriver(extremely easy), shimmed the bracket gap, and loc-tited the new bolts, along with lock washers for good measure.

I got 62 miles on it already and its still in place just as tight as it was. So far so good, I think we can call it problem solved.

okay i'm having the same problem except mine broke and i lost pretty much alot of power like the clutch was slipping. Is this problem with everyone else or no?

this just happened to me.. for the second time i might add.. i know i dont have the ac bracket, and the 1st time im pretty sure we added washers, thu im not sure, but i just read on here to use 4 standard flat washers?... ok.. i will... my question is should i really add loctite?.. if they happen to snap again wont that make that much harder to extract the broken bolt?.. and lock washers? will this mean longer bolts?....:hmm:this ruined my axle so now i have to wait on autozone to get back with the replacment..woohoo for lifetime warranty!!!!!

i had to limp it home.. i hope i didnt ruin my clutch.. any ideas?

as it turns out the bolts that were used were the wrong pitch... when we finally extracted the broken pieces from the block it turns out the pitch was different from the ones i order from the dealer.... im sure theres alot of physics behind it but i can tell u that the threads r different.. the oem bolts were tighter...hmmm hope that helps.... p.s. we had to retread the holes too..

Is this an issue with a 2g 7 bolt after removing the a/c bracket?
If you remove the A/C bracket, you'll need to use something (like washers) to space out the shaft bracket from the block. If you don't use anything at all, it will cause the shaft to be misaligned and it will eventually destroy the bearing.

The best thing to use as a spacer is the A/C bracket itself. The problem is that it's big, bulky, and heavy. So, all you need to do it cut off a small section from the bottom of it just to use as a spacer.
