So.... I bought a 92 :dsm: GSX - WooHoo!

The guy I bought it from had it a relativley short time and started modding it.

Upgrades include:

VIS Carbon Fiber Hood
17"Excel UltraLights
Slotted/Crossdrilled Rotors
Stainless/Braided Brake lines
Adjustable Shoxxx with Crappy springs (THUNK! when I corner sharply)
2.25" IC Piping (but not the IC :()
K&N Cone
turboXS H34 racing bypass valve (Any Good?)
3" Turbo Back Exhaust :shhh:
ShiftKit of some sort (it's an Auto :()
AutoMeter EGT and Boost Gauge
Apex'i Pen style Turbo Timer
Some No Name A/F Ratio Gauge (like 7 or 8 LEDs lean to rich)
PalmN'Stein Datalogger (and palm of course)

The thing was running great! But now for some reason or other.... It keeps KNOCKING :(
I logged the last trip I made and it seems like the Knock Ret hits 15 whenever my timing drops... If I stomp the gas for a moment - let it hit full boost & then let off quickly, when I ease back onto the accelerator it ceases to knock. WTF?
Im wondering if perhaps I have a bad sensor or two? My A/F ratio NEVER used to get as rich as I've seen it recently. (It runs @ 14.6 when cruising and USUALLY only gets down to 13.1 or so when smashin the pedal - lately, it's been gettin down to 12.0!) Any ideas, comments or suggestions?

Oh - Anyone have any wild guesses as far as WHP output on this car? What about at the block? It has a TD04 turbo - isn't that the 13b?

ANd before you GRILLLLLL me - yes, I have read the newbies stuff (which is why I have what small amount of knowledge I retain for these cars)

You guys are a great group - I'm stoked to own a DSM, you seem like some really helpful and cooool cats!

Holla Back!

TDO5H is the 14B turbo this models have

Congrats on your purchase and happy boosting

Don't be ashame to have an AUTO, I have one with a Translab shift Kit (wich is prolly the one you got) and a 4000RPM stall converter.

Only thing you need to make an auto fast is a Shift Kit , High stall torque converter , and End clutch kit. With all that you should be set for drag racing and will easely keep up with MTX GSX :thumb:

EDIT: just saw you mentionned you had TD-04, yes this is the 13G turbo wich is very small, if you intend on racing you should upgrade to the 14B from a manual car or just go ahead and save time nd money and buy a 16G

Yeah - I figured it was the small one.. :( (13b) ere well - that just means when I throw a big fat EVOIII 16G in there, i'll really notice a difference, right!?! haha

Any ideas on HP ratings? anyone, anoyone?
Any idea why this thing keeps bogging and saying it's knocking?
Can I use a boost controller on the Automatic Trans setup?

Thanks Fellas!

nice find, no intercooler???, i had and auto as my first dsm and when you pull the 13g off you will laugh at how small it is, before you through a larger turbo on you will need fuel system upgrades expecially on auto because they came with 390cc injectors instead of 450cc, you might want to also look into manual transmision cams because the automatics had different ones the made the car more torquey in lower rpm's but fall off at higher rpms, check out the AT sub-fourm we have here its under the drivetrain forum. good luck with the car

Thanks Scott!

It has the stock IC on it... guess I should replace that first. :(
Thanks for the tips on the AT - ill head over there now. Anyone have some stock MT cams they need removed from their garage?
Any thoughts or comments on why it might be bogggging like it is? It feels like it's getting TOO much fuel or something - but if that were the case, why would it be registering the Max Value for Knock Ret? Im so lost. :barf:

Yea no problem, i might be getting rid of some MT cams in the next week or so ill pm you if i do, dont worry about the stock intercooler until you get a larger turbo and if you only decide to go up to a 16g then a supra sidemount would work fine.

Don't swap to manual cams. The difference between auto cams and manual cams is almost nothing. I'm 100% positive you won't notice a difference. Definetly not worth the time.

"Bought My First DSM!! HELP!!"

Get used to saying that.

You dont think I should bother with the Manual Cams? I do want to upgrade the turbo at some point in the near future (waiting for a good deal) even if its only to the stock Manual one. If the MT cams will give me better top end - then I would like to give it a go (see WRX comment below)

You think 155whp is a pretty accurate guess? I know this thing has to lose quite a bit through the AWD drivetrain... :-/
I know I played tag with a friends 94 Probe GT - he wasn't gettin away from me, but I wasnt exactly pullin on him. I think those came with 178 stock and his has 2.5" exhaust etc. I also pulled quite a bit on WRX - although it appeared he had more to dish out in the top end when I let off. (we were following a funeral precession - LOL)

LOL, I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought that was funny.

"Bought my first DSM! What was I thinking!?"

"Bought my first DSM! Now what am I going to drive when I actually need to get somewhere?!"

"Bought my first DSM! What do you guys know about home equity loans!?"
