Boost controlling issues HX35

I've spent the full day looking up at all the threads on this and can't really pin point anything. So here is my issue.... and I'll put a log on here.

The last hx35 was swapped out in favor for a newer rebuilt model, well upon pulling everything apart I noticed the exhaust manifold was cracked (4 cracks and was actually falling apart. I replaced the manifold with a Punishment Racing t3/t4 budget manifold and put the new turbo on. The car has a Hallman mbc, this car was set at 18psi and holding fine before the manifold and turbo swap. Now when throttling I am not able to control boost, it keeps climbing. I went back through and double checked everything and made another pull (this time logging). I backed off the throttle and hit 37psi and popped a intercooler coupler.


I don't know if it's the boost controller or if I am overlooking anything. The wastegate is external Tial 38mm. I'll put up the datalog.. mind you my car is not tuned to go this high.

Did you do any boost leak tests, if you havent go ahead and do that to see if you have any leaks, never assume there are any until you have, i had some when i bought my 2g with the hx40 on it, couldnt tell you more than that, car is in georgia so i havent played with it yet.

MY hx35/40 hybrid seems to creep too, only way i stopped it was to program a change in duty cycle with rev increase to keep it solid, they are just that damn efficient i beleive

Nothing as changed though besides new manifold... on a boost leak wouldn't that hamper my boost. I'm not losing boost I'm gaining way to much and can't control it. Before this new turbo, remember my previous turbo was an HX35, had no creep issues what so ever. All I did was pick up a rebuilt turbo and new manifold.

Correct me if I'm wrong but your boost controller set up is backwards. I have the same mbc and where your wastegate line is that should go to your boost source and your boost source line should go to your wastegate.

Can you post up a picture, I understand what your saying but I didn't take down the controller. I thought I had it exactly like it was... but I'll pull up the install instructions and take a look. That would cause a issue though

Yep Yep. Partially the reason you buy an external, so you know it will control the boost no matter what.

Quick & easy test to do. Now hurry up. Also, what spring is in the TiAL?

The car must have been pulling pretty hard haha. You weren't knocking so you weren't really going to hurt anything.

I'm willing to bet there is a small split in one of your lines going to mbc or gate that you missed, or if you have a plastic T being used, a crack in that.

It's the wastegate, did a pull from it and still nothing. We took it apart and the diaphragm was pinched and had a small tear in it. Thanks, heading out to pick up a new one now.

No it was a F38 and I just got a new F38 ( at a good price), I'm planning to have a fabicator make me a top mount manifold with the Tial MVS wastegates.

I thought the new wategate would fix the issue... I installed the wasteagte and went for a run. Same thing 30psi and pulling. I was a bit lost and decided to really start looking, pulled the wastegate and looked in the exhaust port to see if something was clogged. Nothing there, so I went back to the housing was looked in. It's a elbow piece and looked good until I found a set screw in the side of it, this screw was screwed all the way in and looking in I found it was completely blocking the port. Tomorrow I'll install the new port piece. Here is a picture showing.

I wanted to add to this thread even though it's resolved. IF you buy a Holset from a truck guy, make sure to look for that 90* nipple with the screw in it. This from what I understand is a very popular mod with the Cummins guys. Look it up on eBay, 'boost elbow'.
