black dust on Rear Bumper

i recently installed an Apex'I N1 downpipe and cat back exhaust on my 96' gst spyder. since the install a black dust has been covering my rear bumper and actually burning the bumper exhaust outlet. i am in the process of installing a wbo2 sensor in the hopes i am just running rich. if this has occured to anyone else any info would be helpfull. Thanks

Sounds like regular exhaust fumes dirtying up the bumper. Place the muffler a little more out of the exit of the bumper.

Called "soot" and it's a normal part of exhaust-but do check into being rich.

Either get that pipe down lower into the airstream, or the end pipe out farther since, with the forward movement of a car, it's creating a partial vacuum back there and exhaust actually is getting sucked into the vacuum (why, with vehicles with rear hatches or window gates are not to have these left open since the vacuum actually sucks the exhaust back into the cabin..) and depositing on the rear surface areas.

agreed. Also the dust from you brakes may car black soot like substance to develop. My car gets filthy behind my rear tires and bumper area.

Sounds like you running rich as hell, I used to have that same issue on my first GST

I used to just wipe the rear bumper after every drive......until I got tired and fixed the issue

ya its pretty annoying i wash and wax the bumper and a day or two later in black again plus the car is white so it makes it even worse. im gonna be puttin my wbo2 on shortly so hopefully that the problem.

degreaser works wonders... jusr rewax the bumper afterwords

Reminds me of a little red Miata I saw on the highway the other day... back bumper and license plate COMPLETELY covered in soot.

But yeah, I think you need to re-angle or move the muffler tip farther out.

definitely see if you can re-angle the muffler. I havent had a problem with it on my 2g but my 1g used to get a little dirty back there. The Megan Exhaust systems always provide just enough clearance for that kinda thing.

wouldnt white or grey smoke mean running to rich? i thought black smoke or "soot" was an early sing of bad rings or possibly blowby.


either way it does sound like if you reangled your muffler it would solve the problem and im sure any muffler shop could tackle that for you for a mear 20$

In general:

black smoke = burning gas (rich)
blue/grey smoke = burning oil
white smoke = burning coolant (or oil)

greyish black smoke that is too thick to see through = someone dumped Seafoam into your intake

Honda guys love to put those metal covers on the exhaust outlet side of their bumpers. They like to say they are so that the bumper doesn't start on fire but come on... we know they actually add more horse power than an AEM sticker.
